— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Good Character)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

مَنْ حَسُنَتْ خَليقَتُهُ طابَتْ عِشرَتُهُ۔

This can be translated as,

One whose qualities are good, his companionship is pleasant.

Let us delve into the essence of this Hadith in light of the Quran.

The key word in this Hadith is (khalīqatuhu) "خَليقَتُهُ", which refers to a person's qualities, character, or disposition. It encompasses the inner traits and attributes that define an individual's behavior, conduct, and interactions with others. It is through these qualities that a person's true nature is revealed.

Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) emphasizes the importance of good character in numerous verses of the Quran. In Surah Al-Qalam, Allah says, (68:4)

And indeed, you are of a great moral character.

This verse highlights the exceptional character of the Prophet Muhammad (), who serves as the epitome of moral excellence for all Muslims to emulate.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Hujurat, Allah instructs the believers, (49:11)

O you who have believed, let not a people ridicule [another] people; perhaps they may be better than them; nor let women ridicule [other] women; perhaps they may be better than them. And do not insult one another and do not call each other by [offensive] nicknames. Wretched is the name of disobedience after [one's] faith. And whoever does not repent - then it is those who are the wrongdoers.

These verses emphasize the importance of treating others with respect, dignity, and kindness, regardless of their background or status. It is through good character and noble conduct that we can foster harmonious relationships and create a pleasant atmosphere in our interactions with others.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), being the epitome of knowledge and wisdom, understood the significance of good character in shaping one's companionship. He recognized that a person's qualities have a direct impact on the atmosphere and dynamics of their relationships. When a person possesses good character, their companionship becomes pleasant and enjoyable for those around them.

For instance, imagine a person who is known for their honesty, kindness, and empathy. Their presence brings comfort and reassurance to others, as they can be trusted and relied upon. Their words are soothing and their actions are guided by compassion. Such a person's companionship is indeed pleasant, as they create an environment of love, understanding, and harmony.

On the other hand, if a person's qualities are negative, such as being dishonest, arrogant, or ill-tempered, their companionship becomes burdensome and unpleasant. Their negative traits create a toxic atmosphere, leading to conflicts, misunderstandings, and discomfort among those around them.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith serves as a reminder for Muslims to strive towards developing good character and nurturing positive qualities within themselves. By doing so, we not only enhance our own well-being but also contribute to the well-being of those around us. Our interactions become more meaningful, our relationships become stronger, and our companionship becomes a source of joy and tranquility.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us the profound impact of our qualities on our companionship. It reminds us of the importance of cultivating good character, as it not only shapes our own behavior but also influences the atmosphere and dynamics of our relationships. Let us strive to embody the teachings of the Quran and the noble example of the Prophet Muhammad () and Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), so that our companionship may be pleasant and beneficial for all. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) guide us in purifying our character and grant us the ability to be a source of goodness and positivity in the lives of others.
