Indeed your goodness towards the ones who plots against you from your opponents and enviers is more irritating for them than your trying to do them harm, and it is [also] a means of inviting them to reform [themselves].

(Ghurar al-Hikam: Good Turns And Benevolent Actions)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

In this profound Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), he highlights the concept of goodness and kindness towards those who harbor ill intentions and envy towards us. The Imam (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states that our acts of goodness towards such individuals can be more irritating to them than any harm we may try to inflict upon them. Moreover, this act of goodness serves as an invitation for them to reform themselves.

Let us delve deeper into the words of this Hadith to gain a better understanding of its significance. The word (ihsanaka) "إحْسانَكَ" refers to acts of goodness, kindness, and excellence. It encompasses all forms of benevolence and righteousness. The word (man kadaka) "مَنْ كادَكَ" refers to those who plot against or oppose us. These individuals may harbor envy, jealousy, or ill intentions towards us. The word (al-adad wa al-hussad) "الأضْدادِ والحُسّادِ" refers to opponents and enviers respectively.

To comprehend the depth of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Fussilat (41:34),

And not equal are the good deed and the bad. Repel [evil] by that [deed] which is better; and thereupon the one whom between you and him is enmity [will become] as though he was a devoted friend.

This verse emphasizes the superiority of good deeds over evil ones. It encourages us to respond to negativity with kindness and goodness, as it has the power to transform enemies into friends.

Another verse that resonates with the message of this Hadith is found in Surah Al-Mu'minun (23:96), where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,

Repel, by [means of] what is best, [their] evil. We are most knowing of what they describe.

This verse emphasizes the importance of responding to evil with that which is better. It reminds us that Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) is fully aware of our actions and intentions, and He encourages us to choose the path of goodness and righteousness.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us through this Hadith that our acts of goodness towards those who plot against us and harbor envy towards us can have a profound impact. Instead of seeking revenge or causing harm, we should respond to their negativity with kindness, forgiveness, and compassion. This approach can be more effective in changing their hearts and minds than any form of retaliation.

By choosing to respond with goodness, we not only disarm our opponents but also invite them to reflect upon their own actions and attitudes. Our acts of kindness can serve as a catalyst for their personal growth and transformation. It is a powerful way to demonstrate the beauty and strength of our faith and values.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his immense knowledge and wisdom, exemplified this teaching throughout his life. Despite facing numerous challenges and opposition, he consistently responded with kindness and forgiveness. His actions were a reflection of his deep understanding of the Quranic teachings and his commitment to embodying the qualities of a true believer.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us of the power of goodness and kindness in transforming hearts and minds. It encourages us to respond to those who plot against us and harbor envy towards us with acts of benevolence and righteousness. By doing so, we not only irritate our opponents but also invite them to reform themselves. Let us strive to emulate the noble example of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) and respond to negativity with goodness, for it is through this approach that we can truly make a positive impact on the world around us. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) guide us all on the path of righteousness and grant us the strength to embody the teachings of the Quran and the Ahl al-Bayt (عَلَيْهِمُ ٱلسَّلَامُ).
