(Ghurar al-Hikam: Doubt And Misgiving)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure and noble Ahl al-Bayt, and his righteous companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "لايُلْفَى المُريبُ صَحيحاً۔" This Hadith emphasizes the concept that a person who is constantly doubtful and suspicious can never attain a state of soundness and tranquility. Let us delve deeper into the meaning of this Hadith in light of the Quran.

The word (murib) "مُريب" refers to someone who is doubtful, suspicious, or uncertain. This person is constantly plagued by uncertainty and lacks conviction in their beliefs or actions. Such a state of doubt can lead to restlessness, anxiety, and an inability to find peace within oneself.

Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) warns us in the Quran about the destructive nature of doubt and suspicion. In Surah Al-Hujurat (49:12), Allah says,

O you who have believed, avoid much [negative] assumption. Indeed, some assumption is sin. And do not spy or backbite each other. Would one of you like to eat the flesh of his brother when dead? You would detest it. And fear Allah; indeed, Allah is Accepting of repentance and Merciful.

This verse highlights the importance of avoiding negative assumptions and baseless suspicions. It reminds us that harboring doubts and suspicions about others can lead to sinful behavior such as backbiting and slander. Just as we would detest consuming the flesh of our deceased brother, we should detest engaging in harmful assumptions about others.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:6), Allah instructs us,

O you who have believed, if there comes to you a disobedient one with information, investigate, lest you harm a people out of ignorance and become, over what you have done, regretful.

This verse emphasizes the importance of verifying information before passing judgment or taking action. It warns against blindly accepting and acting upon the words of a doubtful or suspicious individual. By investigating and seeking the truth, we can avoid causing harm to others based on false assumptions.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith serves as a reminder that a person who constantly doubts and suspects others can never find true peace and tranquility. When one is consumed by suspicion, it becomes difficult to trust others, leading to strained relationships and a constant state of unease.

Moreover, this Hadith highlights the importance of cultivating a sense of trust and certainty in our hearts. Trust is a fundamental aspect of our faith, as Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly emphasizes the significance of trust in the Quran. In Surah An-Nisa (4:135), Allah says,

O you who have believed, be persistently standing firm in justice, witnesses for Allah, even if it be against yourselves or parents and relatives. Whether one is rich or poor, Allah is more worthy of both. So follow not [personal] inclination, lest you not be just. And if you distort [your testimony] or refuse [to give it], then indeed Allah is ever, with what you do, Acquainted.

This verse encourages us to be just and truthful, even if it goes against our personal interests or biases. It reminds us that Allah is the ultimate witness and judge, and we should strive to uphold justice and fairness in all our dealings. By doing so, we can foster an environment of trust and harmony within our communities.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us the detrimental effects of constant doubt and suspicion. It reminds us to avoid negative assumptions, verify information before passing judgment, and cultivate trust in our hearts. By doing so, we can attain a state of soundness and tranquility, both within ourselves and in our interactions with others. May Allah guide us to be people of trust, certainty, and peace.
