(Ghurar al-Hikam: Disagreement)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure family, his noble companions, and all the righteous Muslims.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "كَثْرَةُ الخِلافِ شِقاقٌ۔" which translates to

Too much disagreement is discord.

This concise statement holds profound wisdom and serves as a reminder for Muslims to strive for unity and avoid excessive disputes and divisions within the Ummah.

Let us delve into the key words of this Hadith to gain a deeper understanding. The word (kathrah) "كَثْرَةُ" means "abundance" or "excess." It refers to a large quantity or a significant increase in something. In this context, it signifies an overwhelming amount of disagreement or disputes.

The word (al-khilaf) "الخِلافِ" means "disagreement" or "difference of opinion." It refers to the divergence of views or conflicting perspectives on various matters. While differences of opinion are natural and can lead to healthy debates and intellectual growth, excessive disagreement can lead to division and discord within the Muslim community.

The word (shiqaq) "شِقاقٌ" means "discord" or "division." It represents the state of being divided or fragmented due to excessive disputes and disagreements. It highlights the negative consequences that arise from an abundance of disagreements, such as the weakening of the Ummah's unity, the loss of focus on common goals, and the erosion of mutual respect and brotherhood among Muslims.

To further understand the significance of this Hadith, let us turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) emphasizes the importance of unity and warns against division in several verses.

In Surah Al-Imran (3:103), Allah says,

And hold firmly to the rope of Allah all together and do not become divided.

This verse emphasizes the unity of the Muslim community and the need to hold onto the teachings of Islam collectively. Excessive disagreements can weaken our unity and hinder our ability to uphold the rope of Allah.

In Surah Al-Anfal (8:46), Allah reminds us,

And obey Allah and His Messenger, and do not dispute and [thus] lose courage and [then] your strength would depart.

This verse highlights the negative consequences of excessive disputes, as it weakens the resolve and strength of the believers. It is through unity and obedience to Allah and His Messenger that we find strength and resilience.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a reminder for Muslims to prioritize unity over excessive disagreements. While differences of opinion are inevitable, it is essential to approach them with wisdom, humility, and respect for one another. Excessive disputes can lead to fragmentation, weakening the Ummah's collective strength and hindering our progress as a community.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his profound knowledge and wisdom, understood the importance of unity and harmony within the Muslim community. He exemplified this through his actions and teachings, always striving to bring people together and resolve conflicts peacefully.

As Muslims, we should reflect on this Hadith and strive to foster unity within our communities. We should seek common ground, focus on our shared values, and work towards the betterment of the Ummah. By doing so, we can overcome discord and strengthen our collective bond as believers.

May Allah (تَبَارَكَ وَتَعَالَىٰ) guide us to unity, grant us wisdom in dealing with disagreements, and bless us with a strong and united Ummah.
