Be grateful to the one who favours you and favour the one who is grateful to you, for indeed there is no end to favours when they are appreciated and there is no continuation for them when they are unappreciated.

(Ghurar al-Hikam: Gratitude And The Grateful)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of gratitude and appreciation. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) advises us to be grateful to those who do us favors and to reciprocate their kindness. He also encourages us to appreciate the gratitude shown by others towards us. The Imam (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) explains that when we express gratitude, the blessings bestowed upon us will continue to increase, and if we fail to appreciate them, they may cease to exist.

To delve deeper into the meaning of this Hadith, let us analyze some key words and phrases. The word (ushkur) "أُشْكُرْ" means "be grateful" or "express gratitude." It implies acknowledging the favor or kindness shown to us and expressing our appreciation. The word (anʿama) "أنْعَمَ" refers to the act of bestowing favors or blessings upon someone. It signifies the goodness and generosity of the one who grants these favors. The word (shakara) "شَكَرَ" means "to be grateful" or "to appreciate." It signifies recognizing and acknowledging the favor or kindness received.

In the Quran, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly emphasizes the importance of gratitude. In Surah Ibrahim (14:7), Allah says,

And [remember] when your Lord proclaimed, 'If you are grateful, I will surely increase you [in favor]; but if you deny, indeed, My punishment is severe.'

This verse highlights the direct correlation between gratitude and the increase in blessings from Allah. When we express gratitude for the favors bestowed upon us, Allah promises to increase those blessings.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Naml (27:40), Allah says,

Said one who had knowledge from the Scripture, 'I will bring it to you before your glance returns to you.' And when [Solomon] saw it placed before him, he said, 'This is from the favor of my Lord to test me whether I will be grateful or ungrateful. And whoever is grateful - his gratitude is only for [the benefit of] himself. And whoever is ungrateful - then indeed, my Lord is Free of need and Generous.'

This verse narrates the story of Prophet Solomon (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) and highlights the importance of gratitude. Prophet Solomon (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) recognized that the blessings he received were a test from Allah. He understood that expressing gratitude was not only beneficial for himself but also a means of acknowledging Allah's generosity.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a reminder for Muslims to be grateful for the favors bestowed upon them by others. It encourages us to reciprocate kindness and appreciate the gratitude shown by others. By doing so, we not only strengthen our relationships but also ensure the continuity of blessings in our lives.

When we express gratitude to those who have done us favors, we acknowledge their goodness and generosity. This acknowledgment strengthens the bond between individuals and fosters a sense of appreciation. Moreover, when we appreciate the gratitude shown towards us, we encourage others to continue expressing their appreciation. This creates a positive cycle of gratitude and fosters a culture of appreciation within our communities.

Conversely, when we fail to express gratitude, we risk losing the blessings bestowed upon us. Allah's favors are not guaranteed to continue if they are unappreciated. By neglecting to acknowledge the kindness of others, we may inadvertently discourage them from further acts of generosity. This can lead to a breakdown in relationships and a loss of blessings in our lives.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of gratitude and appreciation. It encourages Muslims to be grateful for the favors bestowed upon them and to reciprocate kindness. By expressing gratitude, we ensure the continuity of blessings in our lives. Conversely, failing to appreciate the kindness of others may lead to a loss of blessings. Let us strive to cultivate a culture of gratitude and appreciation, for it is through these qualities that we can strengthen our relationships and maintain the blessings bestowed upon us by Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). May Allah guide us all to be grateful and appreciative Muslims.
