مَنْ كَثُرَ حِرْصُهُ كَثُرَ شَقائُهُ۔
One whose greed increases, his wretchedness [also] increases.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Greedy)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
مَنْ كَثُرَ حِرْصُهُ كَثُرَ شَقائُهُ۔
This can be translated as,
One whose greed increases, his wretchedness [also] increases.
Let us now delve into the deeper meaning of this impactful Hadith in light of the Quran. The word (his greed) "حِرْصُهُ" refers to an excessive desire or longing for something. It signifies a state of being consumed by materialistic pursuits and an insatiable appetite for worldly possessions. The word (his wretchedness) "شَقائُهُ" refers to a state of misery, unhappiness, and spiritual deprivation.
The Quran provides us with numerous verses that shed light on the detrimental effects of greed and the consequences it brings upon individuals. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) warns us in Surah Al-Imran, verse 180,
And let not those who [greedily] withhold what Allah has given them of His bounty ever think that it is better for them. Rather, it is worse for them. Their necks will be encircled by what they withheld on the Day of Resurrection.
This verse highlights the punishment that awaits those who hoard their wealth and are consumed by their greed. They will be held accountable for their actions on the Day of Judgment.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Humazah, verses 1-3, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
Woe to every scorner and mocker, who collects wealth and [continuously] counts it. He thinks that his wealth will make him immortal.
These verses depict the attitude of those who are driven by their greed. They become engrossed in accumulating wealth and believe that it will grant them eternal happiness and security. However, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) warns that such individuals will face severe consequences for their actions.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement serves as a reminder to Muslims about the dangers of excessive greed. When a person's desire for material possessions becomes insatiable, it leads to a state of wretchedness and misery. This wretchedness is not only limited to the spiritual realm but also affects one's mental and emotional well-being. Greed blinds individuals from recognizing the blessings bestowed upon them by Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and prevents them from finding true contentment and peace.
Let us reflect upon the consequences of greed in our own lives. When we are consumed by our desires and constantly seek more, we become trapped in a never-ending cycle of dissatisfaction. We are never truly content with what we have and are always yearning for more. This constant pursuit of material possessions and wealth can lead to neglecting our spiritual growth, damaging our relationships, and causing harm to ourselves and others.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) thought-provoking Hadith serves as a reminder for Muslims to strive for moderation and contentment. We should be grateful for the blessings that Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) has bestowed upon us and avoid falling into the trap of excessive greed. By focusing on our spiritual development, practicing gratitude, and using our wealth and resources to benefit others, we can find true happiness and fulfillment in this world and the hereafter.
May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) protect us from the destructive effects of greed and guide us towards a balanced and contented life. Ameen.
