(Ghurar al-Hikam: God-Wariness)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. Blessings and peace be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

Whoever puts on the attires of God-wariness, his garments will not get worn out.

This wise utterance of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the importance of adopting the qualities of God-wariness and righteousness in one's life. Let us delve deeper into the meanings of the key words in this Hadith and explore its significance in light of the Quran.

The word (tasarbal) "تَسَرْبَلَ" in the Hadith refers to putting on or wearing garments. It symbolizes the actions and behaviors that a person adopts in their daily life. The word (athwab) "أثْوابَ" means attires or garments, which represent the qualities and characteristics that a person adorns themselves with. In this context, the attires of God-wariness refer to the virtues and righteous deeds that a person cultivates in their life.

The phrase (lam yablusirbaluhu) "لَمْ يَبْلُ سِرْبالُهُ" in the Hadith means that the garments of the person who adorns themselves with the attires of God-wariness will not get worn out. This signifies that the rewards and blessings of their righteous actions will never diminish or fade away. It is a promise from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) that He will preserve and multiply the rewards of those who strive to embody piety and righteousness.

This Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) finds its resonance in the Quran, where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) promises abundant rewards for those who engage in acts of righteousness and God-wariness. In Surah Al-Hajj, verse 46, Allah says,

So whoever does righteous deeds while being a believer - no denial will there be for his effort, and indeed We, of it, are recorders.

This verse emphasizes that the righteous actions of a believer will never go in vain, and Allah will surely reward them for their efforts.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Kahf, verse 46, Allah states,

Wealth and children are [but] adornment of the worldly life. But the enduring good deeds are better to your Lord for reward and better for [one's] hope.

This verse highlights the temporary nature of worldly possessions and the importance of focusing on enduring good deeds. The attires of God-wariness, mentioned in the Hadith, are the enduring good deeds that will bring eternal rewards and blessings from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).

When a person adorns themselves with the attires of God-wariness, they strive to embody the qualities of piety, righteousness, and moral excellence. They engage in acts of worship, such as prayer, fasting, and charity, with sincerity and devotion. They also strive to fulfill their responsibilities towards others, treating them with kindness, compassion, and justice. These righteous actions become a part of their character, influencing their thoughts, words, and deeds.

The consequences of adorning oneself with the attires of God-wariness are profound. Firstly, it brings about a sense of inner peace and tranquility. When a person lives a life of righteousness, they are free from the burdens of guilt and regret. They experience a deep connection with Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and find solace in His remembrance and worship. Secondly, it earns them the pleasure and blessings of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). Allah promises to reward those who strive to please Him and follow His guidance. Their good deeds will be multiplied and their sins forgiven. Thirdly, it inspires others to follow their example. When people witness the righteousness and piety of others, it encourages them to strive for the same.

Reflecting on this Hadith, we are reminded of the importance of adorning ourselves with the attires of God-wariness. It is not merely about performing rituals, but rather about embodying the values and principles of Islam in every aspect of our lives. By doing so, we can attain the eternal rewards and blessings promised by Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). May Allah guide us all to adopt the attires of God-wariness and grant us success in this world and the Hereafter.

And Allah knows best.
