Hadith #5453

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure Ahl al-Bayt (عَلَيْهِمُ ٱلسَّلَامُ), and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "الشَّهَواتُ سُمُومٌ قاتِلاتٌ", which translates to

Lustful desires are lethal poisons.

This beautiful Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the destructive nature of unchecked and uncontrolled desires.

To understand the depth of this statement, let us delve into the meanings of the key words used. "الشَّهَواتُ" refers to lustful desires or passions that arise within a person. And do not approach unlawful sexual intercourse. Indeed, it is ever an immorality and is evil as a way.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Qasas (28:50), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) reminds us of the consequences of succumbing to our desires, stating,

But if they do not respond to you - then know that they only follow their [own] desires. And who is more astray than one who follows his desire without guidance from Allah? Indeed, Allah does not guide the wrongdoing people.

This verse highlights the danger of allowing our desires to lead us astray, as it distances us from the guidance of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement serves as a profound reminder for Muslims to be vigilant and cautious when it comes to their desires. Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement also serves as a motivation for Muslims to strive for self-control and discipline. By recognizing the destructive nature of unchecked desires, we are encouraged to actively resist and overcome them. This requires cultivating a strong sense of taqwa (God-consciousness) and seeking guidance from the Quran and the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) and his Ahl al-Bayt (عَلَيْهِمُ ٱلسَّلَامُ).
