Let not the good doer and the evildoer be equal in your eyes, for will make the good-doer abstain from his benevolence and will encourage the evildoer to continue his evil.

Let not the good doer and the evildoer be equal in your eyes, for will...

— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Good Doer)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. Blessings and peace be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of distinguishing between the actions of a good-doer and an evildoer. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) advises us not to consider them equal in our eyes, as this equality can have detrimental effects on both the good-doer and the evildoer.

To understand the deeper meaning of this Hadith, let us examine some key words. The word (muhsin) "مُحْسِنُ" refers to a person who performs acts of goodness and righteousness. This includes acts of kindness, charity, and benevolence towards others. On the other hand, the word (musi') "مُسِيءُ" refers to someone who engages in evil actions, such as harming others, spreading corruption, or committing sins.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) warns us against treating these two types of individuals as equals. He states that if we do so, it will lead to negative consequences. Firstly, it will discourage the good-doer from continuing their acts of benevolence. When the good-doer sees that their efforts are not appreciated or valued, they may become disheartened and lose motivation to continue their virtuous deeds. This can have a detrimental effect on society, as acts of kindness and charity are essential for the well-being and progress of any community.

Secondly, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights that treating the evildoer as equal to the good-doer will encourage the evildoer to persist in their evil actions. When the evildoer sees that their actions are not condemned or discouraged, they may feel emboldened to continue their harmful behavior. This can lead to a perpetuation of evil and the spread of corruption within society.

To further understand the significance of this Hadith, let us turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly emphasizes the importance of performing good deeds and abstaining from evil actions. In Surah Al-Baqarah, Allah says, (Quran 2:43)

And establish prayer and give zakah and bow with those who bow [in worship and obedience]. Do you order righteousness of the people and forget yourselves while you recite the Scripture? Then will you not reason?

This verse highlights the importance of not only encouraging others to do good but also practicing it ourselves.

Additionally, in Surah Al-Ma'idah, Allah states, (Quran 5:2)

Help one another in righteousness and piety, but do not help one another in sin and aggression. And fear Allah; indeed, Allah is severe in penalty

This verse emphasizes the need to support and assist each other in performing righteous deeds while avoiding any form of cooperation in sinful or aggressive behavior.

Reflecting on these Quranic verses and the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), we understand that it is our duty as Muslims to recognize and appreciate the efforts of those who strive to do good. By valuing and encouraging their actions, we create an environment that fosters continuous acts of kindness and righteousness. Conversely, we must also condemn and discourage evil actions, ensuring that they do not persist and harm society.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a reminder for Muslims to differentiate between the good-doer and the evildoer. By recognizing the importance of this distinction, we can motivate the good-doer to continue their virtuous acts and discourage the evildoer from persisting in their harmful behavior. This understanding aligns with the teachings of the Quran, which emphasize the significance of performing good deeds and abstaining from evil actions. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) guide us all to be among the muhsinun and protect us from falling into evil.
