(Ghurar al-Hikam: Diligence And Striving)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure Ahl al-Bayt (عَلَيْهِمُ ٱلسَّلَامُ), and his noble companions.

The Arabic phrase of the Hadith is

قَدْ سَعِدَ مَنْ جَدَّ۔

which translates to

One who is diligent becomes fortunate.

Let us delve into the deeper meaning of this enlightening Hadith in light of the Quran.

The word (sa'ida) "سَعِدَ" in the Hadith refers to being fortunate, blessed, or successful. It signifies a state of happiness and contentment that is attained through one's efforts and actions. The word (jadda) "جَدَّ" means diligence, exertion, or striving. It implies putting in consistent effort and working hard towards a goal.

The Quranic verses beautifully echo the essence of this Hadith. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly emphasizes the importance of striving and exerting effort in various aspects of life. In Surah Al-Insan (76:3), Allah says,

Indeed, We guided him to the way, be he grateful or be he ungrateful.

This verse highlights that guidance is granted to those who make an effort to seek it, whether they are grateful or not.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Balad (90:4), Allah states,

We have certainly created man into hardship.

This verse acknowledges the challenges and difficulties that human beings face in life. It implies that success and fortune are not easily attained; they require perseverance and hard work.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the correlation between diligence and fortune. It teaches us that by putting in consistent effort and striving towards our goals, we can attain success and blessings in this world and the hereafter.

For instance, in the realm of knowledge, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) is renowned for his profound wisdom and knowledge. He attained this status through his unwavering dedication to seeking knowledge, spending countless hours in study and reflection. His diligence in acquiring knowledge made him fortunate, as he became the epitome of wisdom and guidance for Muslims throughout history.

Similarly, in our personal and professional lives, we must adopt a diligent approach. By setting clear goals, working hard, and consistently striving to improve ourselves, we can achieve success and fulfillment. Whether it is in our studies, careers, relationships, or spiritual journey, diligence is the key to unlocking our potential and attaining blessings from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).

The consequences of diligence are far-reaching. When we are diligent in our worship, we develop a strong connection with Allah and experience the sweetness of faith. When we are diligent in our work, we excel in our endeavors and make a positive impact on society. When we are diligent in our relationships, we build strong bonds of love and compassion. The rewards of diligence extend to both this world and the hereafter.

Reflecting on the Hadith, we should ask ourselves: Are we truly diligent in our pursuits? Are we putting in consistent effort and striving towards our goals? Let us remember that fortune favors those who are diligent. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the strength and motivation to be diligent in all aspects of our lives, and may He bless us with success and happiness.
