مَنْ سَرَّهُ الفَسادُ ساءَهُ المَعادُ۔
One who is pleased by corruption is displeased by the Hereafter.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Corruption)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
مَنْ سَرَّهُ الفَسادُ ساءَهُ المَعادُ۔
This Hadith can be translated as,
One who is pleased by corruption is displeased by the Hereafter.
Let us delve into the significance of this Hadith in light of the Quran.
The word (fasad) "فَسادُ" in this Hadith refers to corruption, mischief, or wrongdoing. It encompasses any action or behavior that deviates from the path of righteousness and leads to harm and destruction. The term (ma'ad) "مَعادُ" refers to the Hereafter, the ultimate destination and eternal life after death.
To understand the significance of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. In Surah Al-Baqarah, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) warns against spreading corruption on earth: (Quran 2:11-12)
And when it is said to them, 'Do not cause corruption on the earth,' they say, 'We are but reformers.' Unquestionably, it is they who are the corrupters, but they perceive it not.
Here, Allah emphasizes that those who engage in corruption and mischief may perceive themselves as reformers, but in reality, they are the ones causing harm and destruction. They fail to recognize the consequences of their actions and the negative impact it has on society.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Qasas, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) warns against the consequences of corruption and wrongdoing: (Quran 28:5-6)
And We caused the people who had been oppressed to inherit the eastern regions of the land and the western ones, which We had blessed. And the good word of your Lord was fulfilled for the Children of Israel because of what they had patiently endured. And We destroyed [all] that Pharaoh and his people were producing and what they had been building.
In this ayah, Allah highlights the destruction that befell Pharaoh and his people due to their corruption and oppression. Their arrogance and disregard for justice ultimately led to their downfall and the destruction of their civilization.
From these Quranic verses, we can understand that corruption and wrongdoing have severe consequences both in this world and the Hereafter. The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) further emphasizes this point by stating that those who take pleasure in corruption and wrongdoing will ultimately be displeased with the Hereafter.
Reflecting on this Hadith, we can see that it serves as a reminder for Muslims to always strive for righteousness and to avoid any form of corruption or wrongdoing. It reminds us that our actions in this world have consequences in the Hereafter, and we should be mindful of the choices we make.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) was known for his deep knowledge and understanding of Islam. His wisdom and teachings continue to guide Muslims to this day. This Hadith highlights his profound insight into the human psyche and the consequences of indulging in corruption.
As Muslims, we should take this Hadith to heart and strive to be agents of positive change in society. We should reject corruption in all its forms and work towards establishing justice, peace, and righteousness. By doing so, we can ensure that we are pleased with the Hereafter and attain the eternal rewards promised by Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). May Allah guide us all on the straight path and protect us from the temptations of corruption.
