(Ghurar al-Hikam: Servants)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

When Allah loves a servant, He adorns him with tranquillity and forbearing.

This beautiful Hadith highlights the immense blessings and favors that Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) bestows upon those whom He loves. Let us delve into the deeper meaning of this Hadith in light of the Quran.

The first important word in this Hadith is (zayyanahu) "زَيَّنَهُ", which means to adorn or beautify. When Allah loves a servant, He adorns them with two qualities: (sakeenah) "السَّكينَةِ" and (hilm) "الحِلْمِ". The word "السَّكينَةِ" refers to tranquillity, peace, and serenity. It is a state of inner calmness and contentment that Allah bestows upon His beloved servants. The word "الحِلْمِ" means forbearance or patience. It signifies the ability to remain patient and composed in the face of difficulties and hardships.

To understand the significance of these qualities, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. In Surah Al-Baqarah, Allah says, (2:153)

Allah is with those who are patient

This verse highlights the importance of patience and forbearance in the sight of Allah. When Allah loves a servant, He grants them the strength to endure trials and tribulations with patience and composure.

Furthermore, in Surah Ar-Rad, Allah says, (13:23-24)

Indeed, the righteous will be in gardens and springs, accepting what their Lord has given them. Indeed, they were before that doers of good

This verse emphasizes the tranquillity and contentment that the righteous will experience in Paradise. When Allah loves a servant, He blesses them with a sense of inner peace and satisfaction, regardless of their external circumstances.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us that the love of Allah is not merely a theoretical concept, but a tangible reality that manifests in the lives of His beloved servants. When Allah loves someone, He adorns them with tranquillity and forbearance. This means that they are able to navigate through the challenges of life with a calm and patient demeanor.

For example, imagine a person who is going through a difficult time, facing financial hardships, or dealing with a loss. Despite these challenges, they remain steadfast in their faith, trusting in Allah's wisdom and plan. They are not consumed by anxiety or despair, but rather find solace in the tranquillity that Allah has bestowed upon them. This tranquillity enables them to face their difficulties with patience and resilience, knowing that Allah is with them.

The consequences of being adorned with tranquillity and forbearance are profound. It allows the servant to maintain a positive mindset and a strong connection with Allah, even in the face of adversity. This, in turn, strengthens their faith and increases their reliance on Allah. They become a source of inspiration for others, demonstrating the beauty and power of true submission to Allah's will.

Reflecting on this Hadith, we are reminded of the importance of cultivating these qualities in our own lives. We should strive to attain the love of Allah by seeking tranquillity and forbearance. This can be achieved through acts of worship, such as prayer, remembrance of Allah, and seeking knowledge. It also requires us to develop a deep trust in Allah's plan and to surrender our affairs to Him.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us that when Allah loves a servant, He adorns them with tranquillity and forbearance. This Hadith is supported by the Quranic verses that highlight the significance of patience and inner peace in the sight of Allah. We should strive to attain these qualities in our own lives, as they are a reflection of our love for Allah and our submission to His will. May Allah grant us the ability to embody these qualities and attain His love.
