Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. May peace and blessings be upon the Prophet Muhammad (), his progeny, the Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

مَنْ ظَلَمَ رَعِيَّتَهُ نَصَرَ أضْدادَهُ۔

This can be translated as,

One who oppresses his people helps his enemies.

Let us delve into the meaning of the important words in this Hadith. (zalam) "ظَلَمَ" refers to oppression, wrongdoing, or injustice. It encompasses actions that violate the rights of others, causing harm and suffering. (ra'iyyatahu) "رَعِيَّتَهُ" refers to one's subjects or followers, those under their care and responsibility. (nasara) "نَصَرَ" means to help, support, or assist. (adadahu) "أضْدادَهُ" refers to one's enemies or adversaries.

To understand the enlightening message of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) emphasizes justice and warns against oppression in numerous verses. For instance, in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:9), Allah says,

And if two factions among the believers should fight, then make settlement between the two. But if one of them oppresses the other, then fight against the one that oppresses until it returns to the ordinance of Allah.

This verse highlights the importance of resolving conflicts and promoting justice. It emphasizes that oppression should not be tolerated, and those who oppress others should be confronted until they rectify their actions. This aligns with the message of Imam Ali's Hadith, which warns against oppressing one's own people.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Mutaffifin (83:1-3), Allah describes the characteristics of those who engage in oppression:

Woe to those who give less [than due], who, when they take a measure from people, take in full. But if they give by measure or by weight to them, they cause loss.

These verses condemn those who cheat and exploit others, highlighting the consequences of such actions.

Imam Ali's Hadith serves as a reminder that oppressing one's own people not only violates their rights but also aids the enemies of justice and righteousness. When a leader oppresses their subjects, they create an environment of discontent, resentment, and injustice. This weakens the unity and stability of the community, making it vulnerable to external threats.

For example, if a ruler oppresses his people by denying them their basic rights, such as access to education, healthcare, or fair employment opportunities, it leads to frustration and discontent among the population. This can create a breeding ground for extremism, as people may turn to radical ideologies in their desperation for justice. In such a scenario, the enemies of peace and stability can exploit this discontent to further their own agendas.

Conversely, a just and compassionate leader who upholds the rights of their people fosters a harmonious and prosperous society. By ensuring fairness, equality, and dignity for all, they create an environment of trust and unity. This unity strengthens the community, making it resilient against external threats and enabling it to progress and flourish.

Imam Ali's beautiful saying serves as a timeless lesson for all Muslims. It reminds us of the importance of justice, compassion, and fairness in our interactions with others, especially those under our care and responsibility. Whether we are leaders, parents, teachers, or simply individuals within a community, we must strive to treat others with kindness, respect, and justice.

May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) guide us to be just and compassionate in all our dealings and protect us from oppressing others. May we always remember the teachings of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) and strive to emulate his wisdom and knowledge. Ameen.
