(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Believer)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

In this profound Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), he states,

A believer is never anything other than forbearing and merciful.

Let us delve into the depths of this statement and explore its significance in light of the Quran.

The word "mu'min" in Arabic refers to a believer, one who has faith in Allah and His Messenger. It encompasses the essence of true faith and encompasses all aspects of a person's life. The word "halim" translates to forbearing, patient, and gentle. It refers to a person who remains calm and composed in the face of adversity, who exercises self-control and refrains from reacting impulsively. The word "rahim" translates to merciful, compassionate, and kind-hearted. It signifies a person who shows empathy, sympathy, and benevolence towards others.

The Quran beautifully emphasizes the qualities of forbearance and mercy that a believer should possess. In Surah Al-Imran (3:134), Allah says,

Those who spend [in Allah's cause] during ease and hardship and who restrain anger and who pardon the people - and Allah loves the doers of good.

This verse highlights the importance of controlling one's anger and forgiving others, which are essential components of forbearance and mercy.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Furqan (25:63), Allah describes the servants of the Most Merciful as those who

walk upon the earth in humility, and when the ignorant address them [harshly], they say [words of] peace.

This verse emphasizes the importance of responding to ignorance and harshness with peace and kindness, reflecting the quality of forbearance and mercy.

Imam Ali's statement serves as a reminder to Muslims that these qualities are not optional but rather integral to their faith. A true believer is expected to embody these traits in their interactions with others, regardless of the circumstances. By practicing forbearance, one can maintain harmony and peace in relationships, avoiding unnecessary conflicts and misunderstandings. By being merciful, one can alleviate the suffering of others, show compassion, and contribute to a more compassionate society.

The consequences of embodying these qualities are far-reaching. When a believer is forbearing and merciful, they become a source of tranquility and solace for those around them. Their actions inspire others to emulate these qualities, creating a ripple effect of goodness and compassion. Moreover, these qualities strengthen the bond between individuals and foster a sense of unity within the Muslim community.

Reflecting on Imam Ali's statement, we are reminded of the profound wisdom and knowledge he possessed. His words serve as a guiding light for Muslims, urging them to strive for excellence in their character and conduct. By embodying forbearance and mercy, we can fulfill our role as ambassadors of Islam and contribute to a more harmonious and compassionate society.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us that a true believer is characterized by forbearance and mercy. These qualities are not only emphasized in the Quran but also serve as a means to strengthen relationships, foster unity, and create a more compassionate society. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to embody these qualities and follow in the footsteps of the noble Prophet Muhammad () and his purified progeny.
