Keep all your hope for Allah, the Glorified, and do not have hope [in] anyone other than Him, for indeed no one has hoped in other than Allah, the Exalted, but that he has been disappointed.

— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Hope In [The Mercy Of] Allah And [In] Others)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his righteous companions.

The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of placing our hope and trust solely in Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ), and not relying on anyone else. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) advises us to direct all our hopes and expectations towards Allah, recognizing that He alone has the power to fulfill them.

The key words in this Hadith are (hope) "رَجَاء" and (disappointed) "خَابَ". The word "رَجَاء" refers to the feeling of expectation or desire for something to happen, while "خَابَ" means to be let down or disappointed. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) warns us that if we place our hopes in anyone other than Allah, we will ultimately be disappointed.

This teaching of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) is supported by several Quranic verses. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly reminds us in the Quran to put our trust in Him alone and not to rely on anyone or anything else. For example, in Surah Al-Anfal (8:49), Allah says,

And know that whatever you obtain of war booty - indeed, for Allah is one fifth of it and for the Messenger and for [his] near relatives and the orphans, the needy, and the [stranded] traveler, if you have believed in Allah and in that which We sent down to Our Servant on the day of criterion - the day when the two armies met. And Allah, over all things, is competent.

This verse highlights the importance of relying on Allah for sustenance and provisions, even in times of war. It reminds us that our ultimate hope should be in Allah, as He is the one who provides for us and takes care of our needs.

Another relevant verse is found in Surah Al-Ghafir (40:60), where Allah says,

And your Lord says, 'Call upon Me; I will respond to you.' Indeed, those who disdain My worship will enter Hell [rendered] contemptible.

This verse emphasizes the importance of turning to Allah in supplication and seeking His help and guidance. It assures us that Allah will respond to our prayers and fulfill our needs if we sincerely call upon Him. It serves as a reminder that our hope should be directed towards Allah alone, as He is the one who has the power to answer our prayers and grant our wishes.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) advice in this Hadith is profound and has profound implications for our lives as Muslims. By placing our hope and trust in Allah, we free ourselves from the disappointments and uncertainties that come with relying on fallible human beings. We recognize that Allah is the ultimate source of all blessings and that He alone has the power to fulfill our desires and aspirations.

This teaching also serves as a reminder of the importance of having a strong relationship with Allah. When we direct our hopes and expectations towards Him, we are more likely to turn to Him in times of need, seek His guidance, and strive to please Him in all aspects of our lives. This leads to a deeper connection with Allah and a greater sense of peace and contentment.

Furthermore, this Hadith encourages us to have realistic expectations in our interactions with others. While it is natural to have hopes and expectations from people, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us that ultimately, it is Allah who controls the outcomes. By recognizing this, we can avoid disappointment and resentment when others fail to meet our expectations.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a powerful reminder to place our hope and trust solely in Allah. By doing so, we free ourselves from disappointment and uncertainty, and develop a stronger connection with our Creator. May Allah guide us all to have unwavering faith and trust in Him alone.
