(Ghurar al-Hikam: Remembrance [Of Allah] And The Reminder)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his righteous companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

أحَقُّ مَنْ ذَكَرْتَ، مَنْ لايَنْسَاكَ۔

This thought-provoking Hadith emphasizes the importance of remembering and acknowledging those who do not forget you. Let us delve into the exegesis of this Hadith in light of the Quran.

The word (ahhaq) "أحَقُّ" in this Hadith translates to "the most deserving" or "the most worthy." It signifies the superiority and rightful claim of someone over others. In this context, it refers to the individual who is most deserving of being remembered by you. This person holds a special place in your heart and deserves your attention and remembrance.

The word (dhakarta) "ذَكَرْتَ" comes from the root word (dhakara) "ذَكَرَ", which means "to remember" or "to mention." It implies the act of keeping someone in your thoughts, mentioning their name, or recalling their good deeds. Remembering someone is a way of expressing gratitude, love, and appreciation for their presence in your life.

On the other hand, the word (layansaak) "لايَنْسَاكَ" is derived from the root word (nasiya) "نَسِيَ", which means "to forget." It signifies the act of neglecting or failing to remember someone. Forgetting someone can be unintentional or deliberate, but it reflects a lack of concern or disregard for their importance in your life.

To understand the connotation of this Hadith, let us turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly emphasizes the importance of remembrance and gratitude towards those who remember and honor us. In Surah Al-Baqarah, Allah says, (Quran 14:7)

And [recall] when your Lord proclaimed, 'If you are grateful, I will surely increase you [in favor]; but if you deny, indeed, My punishment is severe'

This verse highlights the significance of gratitude and remembrance. When we remember and appreciate those who remember us, we not only strengthen our relationships but also invite the blessings and favor of Allah. By acknowledging the efforts and kindness of others, we create a positive and harmonious environment that fosters love and unity among Muslims.

Moreover, the Quran also emphasizes the importance of not forgetting one another. In Surah Al-Hashr, Allah says, (Quran 59:10)

And those who came after them say, 'Our Lord, forgive us and our brothers who preceded us in faith and put not in our hearts [any] resentment toward those who have believed. Our Lord, indeed You are Kind and Merciful'

This verse teaches us the importance of forgiveness and unity among believers. It reminds us not to hold any resentment or ill feelings towards our fellow Muslims, especially those who have shown us kindness and support. By remembering and acknowledging them, we strengthen the bonds of brotherhood and foster a sense of unity within the Muslim community.

In light of these Quranic teachings, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) holds great significance. It encourages us to prioritize and remember those who do not forget us. This Hadith reminds us to appreciate and acknowledge the efforts, love, and support of those who hold a special place in our lives.

By remembering and mentioning those who remember us, we not only fulfill our duty of gratitude but also strengthen our relationships and create a positive atmosphere of love and unity within the Muslim community. It is a reminder to reciprocate the kindness and care we receive from others, ensuring that we never neglect or forget those who hold a special place in our hearts.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us of the importance of remembering and appreciating those who do not forget us. It emphasizes the significance of gratitude, unity, and love within the Muslim community. By following this guidance, we can strengthen our relationships and create an atmosphere of harmony and compassion among Muslims. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to remember and appreciate those who remember us.
