Hadith #2177

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

الحازِمُ من دارى زمانه

which translates to

The judicious person is one who is amicable with [the people of] his time.

This Hadith emphasizes the importance of being wise and adaptable in dealing with the circumstances and challenges of one's time.

To understand the deeper meaning of this Hadith, let us first explore the key words. The word (al-hazim) "الحازِمُ" refers to a person who possesses wisdom, prudence, and the ability to make sound judgments. This individual is not only knowledgeable but also possesses the wisdom to apply that knowledge effectively. The word (dara) "دارى" means to be amicable, friendly, and accommodating towards others. And (zamana) "زمانَهُ" refers to one's time or era.

To further elucidate the meaning of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) instructs us in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:13),

O mankind, indeed We have created you from male and female and made you peoples and tribes that you may know one another.

This verse highlights the importance of building harmonious relationships and understanding among people, regardless of their differences. It encourages us to be amicable and accommodating towards others, just as the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes.

Except for those who have believed and done righteous deeds and advised each other to truth and advised each other to patience.

This verse emphasizes the importance of mutual consultation and cooperation in order to uphold truth and patience. It reminds us that being judicious requires not only being amicable but also advising and guiding one another towards righteousness and patience.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) exemplified these qualities throughout his life. His knowledge and wisdom were renowned, and he was known for his ability to adapt to the circumstances of his time. He demonstrated this adaptability during his caliphate when he dealt with various challenges and conflicts with wisdom, patience, and justice. The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us the importance of being judicious and adaptable in our interactions with others.
