(Ghurar al-Hikam: Judiciousness)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

Tranquillity before [gaining] awareness [of the situation] is contrary to judiciousness.

This Hadith emphasizes the importance of acquiring knowledge and understanding before making decisions or taking action. Let us delve deeper into the meaning and implications of this beautiful Hadith in light of the Quran.

The word "tranquillity" in Arabic is (الطمأنينة) "tuma'nīnah", which refers to a state of calmness, peace, and serenity. It implies a sense of inner composure and tranquility that allows one to think clearly and make sound judgments. On the other hand, "awareness" is translated from the Arabic word (الخبرة) "khubrah", which refers to having knowledge or understanding of a particular situation or matter.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights that tranquillity without having awareness or understanding of the situation is contrary to judiciousness. In other words, making decisions or taking action without having sufficient knowledge can lead to hasty and ill-informed choices, which may have adverse consequences.

The Quran supports this principle of seeking knowledge and understanding before making decisions. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:6),

O you who have believed, if there comes to you a disobedient one with information, investigate, lest you harm a people out of ignorance and become, over what you have done, regretful.

This verse emphasizes the importance of verifying information and seeking knowledge before acting upon it, to avoid causing harm due to ignorance.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Isra (17:36), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) instructs us,

And do not pursue that of which you have no knowledge. Indeed, the hearing, the sight, and the heart - about all those [one] will be questioned.

This verse reminds us that we will be held accountable for our actions, and it is essential to base our decisions on knowledge rather than assumptions or hearsay.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement serves as a reminder for Muslims to prioritize seeking knowledge and understanding in all aspects of life. It encourages us to be patient and composed, to reflect and gather information before making judgments or taking action.

By acquiring knowledge, we gain a deeper understanding of the world around us and the consequences of our actions. This knowledge enables us to make informed decisions that align with the teachings of Islam and contribute positively to society. It prevents us from falling into the trap of impulsiveness, which can lead to regret and harm.

For example, in our personal lives, we may encounter situations where we feel compelled to react immediately without fully understanding the circumstances. However, by following the guidance of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) and seeking knowledge, we can approach such situations with wisdom and patience. This approach allows us to gather all relevant information, consider different perspectives, and make well-thought-out decisions that are in line with Islamic principles.

In the broader context of society, this Hadith reminds us of the importance of critical thinking and intellectual development. It encourages us to engage in lifelong learning, to question assumptions, and to seek knowledge from reliable sources. By doing so, we can contribute to the betterment of our communities and address social issues with wisdom and insight.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the significance of acquiring knowledge and understanding before making decisions or taking action. It reminds us to be patient, seek information, and reflect before acting. By following this principle, we can avoid hasty judgments, make informed choices, and contribute positively to our personal lives and society as a whole. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom and guidance to seek knowledge and act judiciously.
