(Ghurar al-Hikam: Magnanimity)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

The most honourable magnanimity is loyal brotherhood.

This Hadith highlights the significance of maintaining strong bonds of brotherhood among Muslims. Let us delve deeper into the words of this Hadith and explore its significance in light of the Quran.

Firstly, let us examine the word "ashraf" which means "the most honourable" or "the noblest." This term emphasizes the elevated status of the attribute being discussed. In this context, it refers to the virtue of brotherhood, highlighting its importance and superiority among other qualities.

Next, we come across the term "muruwwah," which can be translated as "magnanimity" or "excellence." It signifies the quality of being generous, noble, and virtuous. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) is teaching us that the highest form of magnanimity lies in fostering and upholding loyal brotherhood.

Now, let us turn to the Quran to find support for this profound teaching. In Surah Al-Hujurat (49:10), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,

The believers are but brothers, so make settlement between your brothers.

This verse emphasizes the unity and brotherhood that should exist among Muslims. It reminds us that we are all part of the same Ummah, and it is our duty to resolve conflicts and maintain harmonious relationships.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Isra (17:70), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,

And We have certainly honored the children of Adam.

This verse highlights the inherent dignity and honor bestowed upon all human beings. It serves as a reminder that every individual, regardless of their background or social status, deserves respect and brotherly love.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) encourages us to prioritize loyal brotherhood, which encompasses mutual support, love, and respect among Muslims. This concept goes beyond mere acquaintanceship or casual friendships. It entails a deep sense of loyalty and commitment towards one another, mirroring the bond of brotherhood that exists within a family.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes that true magnanimity lies in fostering and nurturing this loyal brotherhood. When Muslims genuinely care for one another, they create a strong and united community that can withstand challenges and adversities. This unity not only strengthens the individual but also enhances the collective strength of the Ummah.

Practicing loyal brotherhood has numerous positive consequences. It fosters a sense of belonging and support, creating an environment where individuals feel safe and valued. It promotes cooperation, empathy, and compassion, leading to a society that is characterized by justice and fairness. Moreover, loyal brotherhood helps in spreading the message of Islam, as Muslims who are united in their love for one another become a shining example for others to follow.

Reflecting upon this Hadith, we should strive to cultivate loyal brotherhood in our lives. We must prioritize building strong relationships with our fellow Muslims, treating them with kindness, respect, and empathy. By doing so, we can contribute to the unity and strength of the Ummah, and ultimately, earn the pleasure of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).

May Allah (تَبَارَكَ وَتَعَالَىٰ) guide us in embodying the noble qualities of loyal brotherhood and grant us the ability to strengthen the bonds of unity among Muslims. Ameen.
