The most hated creature in the sight of Allah is the ignorant person, because He deprived him of what He bestowed on His creation, and that is intellect.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Ignorant And The Foolish)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his purified progeny, and his noble companions.
In this profound Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), he states that the most despised and detested individual in the eyes of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) is the ignorant person. The Arabic word used for "ignorant" in this Hadith is (الجاهِلُ) "al-jahil". This term refers to someone who lacks knowledge, understanding, and wisdom. It is important to note that the ignorance being referred to here is not simply the absence of information, but rather the rejection or negligence of acquiring knowledge and understanding.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) explains that the reason why the ignorant person is despised by Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) is because they have been deprived of the intellect (al-'aql) that Allah has bestowed upon His creation. The intellect is a divine gift that distinguishes humans from other creatures and enables them to comprehend and reflect upon the signs of Allah in the universe. It is through the intellect that humans are able to recognize their Creator, understand His commandments, and fulfill their purpose in life.
The Quran provides numerous verses that emphasize the importance of knowledge and the condemnation of ignorance. In Surah Al-Zumar (39:9), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
Are those who know equal to those who do not know?
This verse highlights the superiority of those who possess knowledge over those who remain ignorant. It implies that ignorance is a state of deficiency and that seeking knowledge is a means of attaining closeness to Allah.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:6), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,
O you who have believed, if there comes to you a disobedient one with information, investigate, lest you harm a people out of ignorance and become, over what you have done, regretful.
This verse emphasizes the importance of verifying information and avoiding hasty judgments based on ignorance. It encourages Muslims to seek knowledge and understanding before making decisions or passing judgments.
The consequences of ignorance are far-reaching and detrimental. Ignorance leads to misunderstanding, prejudice, and injustice. It hinders personal growth, impedes societal progress, and creates divisions among people. Ignorance also makes individuals vulnerable to manipulation and exploitation. Therefore, it is essential for Muslims to actively seek knowledge, educate themselves, and promote a culture of learning and intellectual growth.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement serves as a reminder for Muslims to prioritize the acquisition of knowledge and to strive for intellectual development. It encourages us to reflect upon the signs of Allah in the universe, study the teachings of the Quran and the Ahl al-Bayt (عَلَيْهِمُ ٱلسَّلَامُ), and apply our intellect in all aspects of life. By doing so, we can avoid the state of ignorance that is despised by Allah and fulfill our duty as responsible and enlightened individuals.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the importance of knowledge and condemns ignorance. It reminds Muslims of the divine gift of intellect bestowed upon them by Allah and encourages them to seek knowledge, understand the signs of Allah, and apply their intellect in all aspects of life. By doing so, Muslims can avoid the state of ignorance that is despised by Allah and fulfill their purpose as enlightened individuals. May Allah guide us all on the path of knowledge and wisdom.
