— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Remembrance [Of Allah] And The Reminder)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
مُداوَمَةُ الذِّكْرِ خُلْصانُ الأوْلِياءِ۔
This can be translated as,
Constant remembrance [of Allah] is the quality of the friends [of Allah].
Let us delve into the meaning of this Hadith and explore its implications in light of the Quran. The word "مُداوَمَةُ" refers to continuity and consistency, indicating that the remembrance of Allah should be an ongoing and uninterrupted practice. It is not merely a sporadic act, but rather a constant state of mindfulness and awareness of the Divine presence. The word "الذِّكْرِ" refers to the remembrance of Allah, which encompasses various forms such as recitation of the Quran, supplication, and reflection upon His attributes and blessings.
The Hadith emphasizes that this constant remembrance of Allah is the distinguishing characteristic of the "أوْلِياءِ" or the friends of Allah. The term "أوْلِياءِ" refers to those who have attained a close and intimate relationship with Allah, who are guided by His wisdom, and who strive to fulfill His commands. These individuals are elevated in their spirituality and are granted special proximity to Allah.
To further understand the significance of constant remembrance, we turn to the Quran. In Surah Al-Ra'd (13:28), Allah says,
Those who have believed and whose hearts are assured by the remembrance of Allah. Unquestionably, by the remembrance of Allah, hearts are assured.
This verse highlights the transformative power of remembrance, as it brings tranquility and contentment to the hearts of believers. It is through this constant remembrance that the hearts are purified and strengthened in faith.
Additionally, in Surah Al-Ahzab (33:41-42), Allah commands the believers to remember Him abundantly, stating,
O you who have believed, remember Allah with much remembrance. And exalt Him morning and afternoon.
This verse emphasizes the importance of frequent and consistent remembrance, as it serves as a means of drawing closer to Allah and seeking His pleasure.
The constant remembrance of Allah has profound implications in the lives of Muslims. It serves as a source of guidance, protection, and spiritual nourishment. When one is constantly aware of Allah's presence and remembers Him in all aspects of life, it becomes a driving force for righteous actions and a shield against sin. It instills a sense of humility, gratitude, and reliance on Allah, as one recognizes their dependence on Him in every moment.
Moreover, constant remembrance of Allah strengthens the bond between the servant and the Creator. It deepens the love for Allah and cultivates a sense of intimacy and connection with Him. This remembrance becomes a means of seeking His forgiveness, mercy, and blessings. It also serves as a reminder of the ultimate purpose of life, which is to worship and please Allah in all endeavors.
The consequences of constant remembrance are far-reaching. It leads to spiritual growth, increased mindfulness, and a heightened sense of purpose. It helps individuals navigate the challenges of life with patience and resilience, knowing that Allah is always with them. It brings about a sense of inner peace and contentment, even in the midst of trials and tribulations. Ultimately, constant remembrance of Allah is a pathway to attaining the status of the friends of Allah, who are blessed with His guidance, protection, and eternal companionship.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the significance of constant remembrance of Allah as the defining quality of the friends of Allah. This remembrance is not limited to a specific time or place but should be a continuous practice in the life of a Muslim. By reflecting upon the Quranic verses that emphasize the importance of remembrance, we understand that it is a means of attaining tranquility, seeking closeness to Allah, and living a purposeful and righteous life. May Allah grant us the ability to constantly remember Him and be counted among His beloved friends.
