إنَّ الْحَياءَ والْعِفَّةَ مِنْ خَلائِقِ الإيمانِ، وإنَّهُما لَسَجِيَّةُ الأحْرارِ، وَشيمَةُ الأبْرارِ۔
Verily modesty and chastity are from the characteristics of faith, and they are the traits of the free and the qualities of the virtuous.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Modesty And Shame)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his righteous companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of modesty and chastity as integral aspects of faith. The Arabic word used for modesty is (الْحَياءَ) "al-haya", which refers to a sense of shame or bashfulness that prevents a person from engaging in immoral or indecent behavior. Chastity, on the other hand, is translated from the Arabic word (الْعِفَّةَ) "al-'iffah", which signifies purity and abstinence from any form of sexual misconduct.
These qualities are described as being among the characteristics of faith, indicating that they are inseparable from a true believer. Modesty and chastity are not only virtues but also defining traits of a person who possesses genuine faith. They are the traits of the free, meaning that those who possess these qualities are liberated from the shackles of immorality and indecency. They are also the qualities of the virtuous, highlighting that those who uphold modesty and chastity are righteous individuals who strive to please Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).
The significance of modesty and chastity can be understood through various Quranic verses that emphasize these virtues. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-A'raf (7:26),
O children of Adam, We have bestowed upon you clothing to conceal your private parts and as adornment. But the clothing of righteousness - that is best. That is from the signs of Allah that perhaps they will remember.
This verse highlights the importance of modesty in clothing and behavior, as it is a sign of righteousness and a means of remembrance of Allah.
Furthermore, in Surah An-Nur (24:30), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) commands both men and women to lower their gazes and guard their modesty. This verse emphasizes the need for modesty in one's interactions and the importance of controlling one's desires. It serves as a reminder that modesty is not limited to physical appearance but also encompasses one's thoughts and actions.
The consequences of disregarding modesty and chastity are evident in society today. Immorality and indecency have become widespread, leading to the erosion of moral values and the breakdown of families. By upholding these virtues, Muslims can contribute to the preservation of a righteous society and protect themselves from the negative consequences of immoral behavior.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement serves as a reminder to Muslims of the importance of cultivating modesty and chastity in their lives. It encourages individuals to be mindful of their actions and to strive for moral excellence. By embodying these qualities, Muslims can strengthen their faith and become beacons of righteousness in society.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the significance of modesty and chastity as integral aspects of faith. These qualities are not only virtues but also defining traits of a true believer. By upholding modesty and chastity, Muslims can strive for righteousness and contribute to the establishment of a morally upright society. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the strength to embody these qualities and protect us from the temptations of immorality.
