لِيَخْشَعْ لِلّهِ سُبْحانَهُ قَلْبُكَ، فَمَنْ خَشَعَ قَلْبُهُ خَشَعَتْ جَميعُ جَوارِحِهِ۔

Your heart must submit to Allah, the Glorified, for one whose heart...

(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Heart)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of having a heart that is submissive to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). The word (khasha'a) "خَشَعَ" in Arabic, which is translated as "submit" or "humble," carries a deep meaning. It signifies a state of complete surrender, humility, and reverence towards Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). When one's heart is in a state of submission, it reflects in their actions, thoughts, and behavior.

This Hadith highlights the significance of the heart in Islam. The heart is not merely a physical organ but the center of one's spiritual and emotional being. It is the place where faith resides, and it is through the heart that one connects with Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). When the heart is filled with awe and reverence for Allah, it becomes the driving force behind one's actions and intentions.

To further understand the importance of a submissive heart, let us turn to the Quran for guidance. In Surah Al-Hajj, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (Quran 22:61-62)

That is because Allah causes the night to enter the day and causes the day to enter the night and because Allah is Hearing and Seeing. That is because Allah is the Truth, and that what they call upon other than Him is falsehood, and because Allah is the Most High, the Grand.

These verses remind us of the greatness and sovereignty of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). They emphasize that Allah is the ultimate reality, and everything else is mere falsehood. When our hearts are truly submissive to Allah, we recognize His absolute authority and power. We understand that He is the One who controls the day and night, and He is the All-Hearing and All-Seeing.

A heart that is submissive to Allah is not only aware of His presence but also seeks His guidance and mercy. In Surah Al-Baqarah, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (Quran 2:186)

And when My servants ask you concerning Me, indeed I am near. I respond to the invocation of the supplicant when he calls upon Me. So let them respond to Me [by obedience] and believe in Me that they may be [rightly] guided.

These verses assure us that Allah is always near and ready to respond to our prayers. When our hearts are submissive, we turn to Allah in times of need, seeking His guidance and support. We understand that true guidance and success can only come from Him. This submission leads to a deep connection with Allah, where we rely on Him for every aspect of our lives.

The consequences of having a submissive heart are profound. When our hearts are in a state of submission, it affects our entire being. Our actions, thoughts, and behavior align with the teachings of Islam. We strive to please Allah in all aspects of our lives, seeking His pleasure above all else. This submission brings about a sense of peace, contentment, and tranquility in our hearts.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his immense knowledge and wisdom, emphasizes the importance of a submissive heart in this Hadith. He teaches us that when our hearts are humble and submissive to Allah, it influences our entire being. Our limbs, our senses, and our actions all become obedient to Allah's commandments. This submission becomes a driving force that shapes our character, our relationships, and our interactions with others.

Reflecting on this Hadith, we are reminded of the need to constantly evaluate the state of our hearts. We should strive to cultivate a heart that is submissive to Allah, recognizing His greatness, seeking His guidance, and surrendering to His will. This submission should manifest in our actions, transforming us into better Muslims who strive to please Allah in all aspects of our lives.

May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to have hearts that are submissive to Him, and may He guide us on the path of righteousness. Ameen.
