إنَّ الدُّنيا لَمِشْغَلَةٌ عَنِ الآخِرَةِ، لَمْ يُصِبْ صاحِبُها مِنْها سَبَباً (سَيْباً)، إلاّ فَتَحَتْ عَلَيْهِ حِرْصاً عَلَيْها ولَهَجاً بِها۔
Verily this world is a means of distraction from the Hereafter. Its companion obtains nothing from it except that it opens for him [the door of] greed for it and attachment towards it.

(Ghurar al-Hikam: This World)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the transient nature of this world and its potential to distract us from the ultimate goal of the Hereafter. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
Verily this world is a means of distraction from the Hereafter. Its companion obtains nothing from it except that it opens for him [the door of] greed for it and attachment towards it.
Let us delve into the deeper meaning of this enlightening saying. The word (dunya) "دُّنيا" refers to the material world, the temporal life that we experience. It is a place of trials and tests, where we are constantly exposed to the allurements and distractions that can divert our attention from the eternal life of the Hereafter. The word (mishghalah) "مِشْغَلَةٌ" signifies something that occupies or preoccupies a person, diverting their attention from something more important.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes that this world is a distraction from the Hereafter, the eternal abode that awaits us. The pursuit of worldly desires and material possessions can consume us, leading us away from the remembrance of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and the preparation for the everlasting life to come. The word (sahiboha) "صاحِبُها" refers to the one who accompanies or associates with this world.
To support this understanding, we find numerous verses in the Quran that emphasize the temporary nature of this world and the importance of focusing on the Hereafter. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Kahf (18:45),
And present to them the example of the life of this world, [its being] like rain which We send down from the sky, and the vegetation of the earth mingles with it and [then] it becomes dry remnants, scattered by the winds. And Allah is ever, over all things, Perfect in Ability.
This analogy highlights the fleeting nature of worldly possessions and pleasures. They may seem enticing and fulfilling in the moment, but they ultimately wither away, leaving us empty-handed in the face of the Hereafter. Similarly, in Surah Al-Hadid (57:20), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,
Know that the life of this world is but amusement and diversion and adornment and boasting to one another and competition in increase of wealth and children - like the example of a rain whose [resulting] plant growth pleases the tillers; then it dries and you see it turned yellow; then it becomes [scattered] debris.
These verses remind us that the allurements of this world are temporary and transient. They may bring temporary pleasure and satisfaction, but they do not provide lasting fulfillment or true success. Instead, they distract us from the ultimate purpose of our existence, which is to worship Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and strive for the eternal rewards of the Hereafter.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) further explains that the companion of this world gains nothing from it except an increased desire for worldly possessions and a stronger attachment to them. The word (saba) "سَبَباً" refers to a cause or reason. This implies that the more one indulges in the pursuit of worldly desires, the more their attachment and greed for worldly possessions intensify.
This attachment and greed can lead to a multitude of negative consequences. It can blind us to the true purpose of our existence, causing us to neglect our spiritual growth and the development of our relationship with Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). It can also lead to unethical behavior, as we become willing to compromise our principles and values in order to acquire more wealth and possessions.
Furthermore, this attachment to the world can create a sense of dissatisfaction and restlessness within us. We may constantly strive for more, believing that material possessions and achievements will bring us happiness and contentment. However, as Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us, the pursuit of worldly desires only leads to an insatiable thirst for more, never truly quenching our spiritual thirst.
Reflecting on this Hadith, we are reminded of the importance of prioritizing the Hereafter over the temporary pleasures of this world. We should strive to strike a balance between our worldly responsibilities and our spiritual obligations. By recognizing the transient nature of this world and the eternal nature of the Hereafter, we can redirect our focus towards actions that will benefit us in the long run.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a profound reminder for Muslims to not be consumed by the distractions and allurements of this world. It urges us to prioritize the Hereafter and to seek lasting fulfillment through our relationship with Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). May we strive to detach ourselves from the materialistic pursuits of this world and instead focus on actions that will bring us closer to our ultimate goal of attaining the pleasure of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and the eternal rewards of the Hereafter.
