Hadith #1759

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

طَلَبُ الجَنَّةِ بِلا عَمَل حُمْقٌ۔

This can be translated as,

Seeking Paradise without good deeds is foolishness.

Let us delve into the meaning of this impactful saying . The word (talab) "طَلَبُ" means to seek or desire, while (al-Jannah) "الجَنَّةِ" refers to Paradise. (bila) "بِلا" means without, and (amal) "عَمَل" signifies good deeds. Lastly, (humq) "حُمْقٌ" translates to foolishness or stupidity.

To understand the significance of this Hadith, we must turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly emphasizes the importance of good deeds and righteous actions as a means to attain Paradise. In Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 25, Allah says,

And give good tidings to those who believe and do righteous deeds that they will have gardens [in Paradise] beneath which rivers flow.

This verse clearly highlights the correlation between faith, good deeds, and the reward of Paradise.

Similarly, in Surah Al-Kahf, verse 107, Allah states,

Indeed, those who have believed and done righteous deeds - they will have the Gardens of Paradise as a lodging.

Here, Allah emphasizes that belief alone is not sufficient; it must be accompanied by righteous actions.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement serves as a reminder to all Muslims that merely desiring Paradise without actively engaging in good deeds is foolishness. It is akin to expecting a reward without putting in any effort. Islam teaches us that faith and deeds go hand in hand. Our actions are a reflection of our faith, and they determine our ultimate destination in the Hereafter.
