اَلعَيُّ حَصَرٌ۔
Inarticulateness is beleaguering.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Inarticulateness)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "العَيُّ حَصَرٌ۔" which translates to "Inarticulateness is beleaguering." To understand the connotation behind this statement, let us delve into the important words used in this Hadith.
The word (inarticulateness) "عَيُّ" refers to the inability to express oneself clearly or effectively. It signifies a state of being unable to communicate thoughts, ideas, or emotions in a coherent manner. This can manifest in various forms, such as stuttering, stumbling over words, or struggling to find the right words to convey one's message.
The word (beleaguering) "حَصَرٌ" refers to a state of confinement or restriction. It implies being trapped or encircled, unable to break free from the limitations imposed upon oneself. In the context of this Hadith, it signifies the constriction and frustration experienced by those who struggle with inarticulateness.
To shed light on the significance of this Hadith, let us turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 286:
Allah does not burden a soul beyond that it can bear.
This verse reminds us that Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) is aware of our capabilities and does not place upon us burdens that exceed our capacity to handle them.
In the context of inarticulateness, this verse serves as a reminder that Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) does not burden individuals with challenges they are unable to overcome. While inarticulateness may present difficulties, it is within the realm of our capabilities to find ways to express ourselves effectively, even if it requires patience, practice, and seeking assistance.
Furthermore, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Qamar, verse 17:
And We have certainly made the Quran easy for remembrance, so is there any who will remember?
This verse emphasizes the ease with which the Quran can be understood and internalized. It highlights the importance of seeking knowledge and guidance from the Quran, as it provides clarity and guidance in all aspects of life, including communication.
In light of these Quranic verses, we can understand the exegesis of Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith. Inarticulateness, though it may pose challenges, should not be viewed as an insurmountable obstacle. Muslims should strive to overcome this difficulty by seeking knowledge, practicing effective communication skills, and relying on the guidance of the Quran.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us that inarticulateness can be a form of confinement, limiting our ability to express ourselves and connect with others. It can hinder our personal and professional growth, as well as our relationships with others. Therefore, it is incumbent upon us to strive towards improving our communication skills, seeking assistance when needed, and never underestimating our capacity to overcome this challenge.
By doing so, we can break free from the confines of inarticulateness and fulfill our potential as effective communicators and contributors to society. Let us remember that Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) has blessed us with the ability to articulate our thoughts and emotions, and it is our responsibility to utilize this gift to the best of our abilities.
May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom, patience, and guidance to overcome any challenges we face in our communication and enable us to express ourselves effectively for the betterment of ourselves and our communities.
