(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Brother, The Friend, The Associate And The Companion)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) advises us to refrain from associating with those who are solely attached to the materialistic aspects of this world. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), being the epitome of knowledge and wisdom, provides us with profound guidance on the importance of choosing our companions wisely.

The key words in this Hadith are (ibnā' ad-dunyā) "ابْناءَ الدُّنيا", which can be translated as

those who love this world.

This refers to individuals who are solely focused on worldly possessions, wealth, and material gains. They prioritize their desires and pleasures over spiritual growth and the pursuit of righteousness.

To understand the significance of this Hadith, let us turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) warns us in Surah Al-Imran, verse 14,

Beautified for people is the love of that which they desire - of women and sons, heaped-up sums of gold and silver, fine branded horses, and cattle and tilled land. That is the enjoyment of worldly life, but Allah has with Him the best return.

This verse highlights the allure and attractiveness of worldly possessions, which can distract individuals from their true purpose in life. It is important to note that the love for this world is not inherently evil, but when it becomes the sole focus of one's life, it can lead to neglecting one's spiritual growth and moral values.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) advises us to be cautious of associating with such individuals because their attachment to the material world can have negative consequences. If we have less than them, they will disregard us, showing no empathy or concern for our well-being. On the other hand, if we have more than them, they will envy us, harboring feelings of resentment and jealousy.

This Hadith serves as a reminder for us to evaluate our friendships and associations. We should seek companions who prioritize their spiritual development and strive for righteousness, rather than being solely focused on worldly gains. Surrounding ourselves with individuals who possess noble qualities and values will inspire and motivate us to become better Muslims.

Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) emphasizes the importance of choosing righteous companions in Surah Al-Kahf, verse 28,

And keep yourself patient [by being] with those who call upon their Lord in the morning and the evening, seeking His countenance. And let not your eyes pass beyond them, desiring adornments of the worldly life, and do not obey one whose heart We have made heedless of Our remembrance and who follows his desire and whose affair is ever [in] neglect.

This verse highlights the significance of surrounding ourselves with individuals who are devoted to the worship of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and seek His pleasure. Such companions will remind us of our purpose in life and encourage us to strive for righteousness.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a profound reminder for Muslims to be cautious of associating with those who are solely attached to the materialistic aspects of this world. By choosing righteous companions who prioritize their spiritual growth, we can create an environment that fosters our own spiritual development and helps us remain steadfast on the path of righteousness. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) guide us in choosing our companions wisely and grant us the strength to detach ourselves from the allure of this world.
