حاسِبْ نَفْسَكَ لِنَفْسِكَ فَإنَّ غَيْرَها مِنَ الأنْفُسِ لَها حَسيبٌ غَيْرُكَ۔
Hold yourself to account for your [own] soul for indeed other souls have someone else who will hold them to account.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Soul And Holding It To Account)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of self-accountability. Let us delve into the meaning of the key words in this Hadith and explore its profound implications in light of the Quran.
The word (hasib) "حاسِبْ" is derived from the root word (hasaba) "حَسَبَ", which means to take account, to reckon, or to evaluate. It implies a careful assessment of one's actions, intentions, and behavior. By using this word, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) urges every individual to engage in self-reflection and self-evaluation.
The word (nafsaka) "نَفْسَكَ" refers to oneself or one's own soul. It signifies the individual responsibility each person has towards their own actions and choices. It highlights the need for self-awareness and introspection.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) further states, (fa inna ghayraha mina al-anfusi laha hasibun ghayruk)
فَإنَّ غَيْرَها مِنَ الأنْفُسِ لَها حَسيبٌ غَيْرُكَ
This part of the Hadith emphasizes that every individual is accountable for their own actions, while others have someone else who will hold them accountable. It underscores the individual nature of accountability and the fact that each person is responsible for their own deeds.
To understand the significance of self-accountability, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Isra (17:36),
And do not pursue that of which you have no knowledge. Indeed, the hearing, the sight and the heart - about all those [one] will be questioned.
This verse highlights the importance of being mindful of our actions and intentions. We should not engage in things without knowledge or understanding, as we will be held accountable for them.
Additionally, in Surah Al-Mu'minun (23:62), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
And We have assigned to every person his fate upon his neck, and We will produce for him on the Day of Resurrection a record which he will encounter spread open.
This verse emphasizes that each individual is responsible for their own destiny. Our actions and choices will be recorded and presented to us on the Day of Resurrection.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith serves as a reminder that we should not be preoccupied with the actions of others, but rather focus on our own self-improvement and self-accountability. It encourages us to reflect on our own actions, intentions, and behavior, and to hold ourselves to a high standard of moral conduct.
By engaging in self-accountability, we can identify our shortcomings, rectify our mistakes, and strive for personal growth. It helps us develop a strong sense of self-awareness and fosters a deep connection with Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). It also cultivates a sense of responsibility and integrity within us, leading to a more righteous and fulfilling life.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) urges Muslims to hold themselves accountable for their own actions and choices. It emphasizes the importance of self-reflection, self-improvement, and self-awareness. By focusing on our own accountability, we can strive towards becoming better individuals and fulfilling our responsibilities towards Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom and strength to engage in self-accountability and lead a righteous life.
