(Ghurar al-Hikam: Injustice And Oppression)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. Peace and blessings be upon the Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

لايُؤْمِنُ اللّهُ عَذابَهُ مَنْ لايَأمَنُ النّاسُ جَوْرَهُ۔

This powerful statement highlights the importance of justice and fairness in the eyes of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). Let us delve into the deeper meaning of this Hadith in light of the Quran.

The word (yu'minu) "يُؤْمِنُ" in the Hadith translates to "believes" or "has faith." It signifies a deep trust and reliance on Allah's mercy and protection. The term (Allah 'adhabahu) "اللّهُ عَذابَهُ" refers to the punishment of Allah, which encompasses both worldly consequences and the punishment in the Hereafter. The phrase (man la ya'manu al-nas jawrahu)

مَنْ لايَأمَنُ النّاسُ جَوْرَهُ

means

one from whose oppression people are not safe.

It emphasizes the importance of treating others with fairness, justice, and kindness.

The Quran provides numerous verses that emphasize the significance of justice and warn against oppression. In Surah Al-Hujurat (49:13), Allah says,

O mankind, indeed We have created you from male and female and made you peoples and tribes that you may know one another. Indeed, the most noble of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous of you. Indeed, Allah is Knowing and Acquainted.

This verse highlights the equality of all human beings and the importance of knowing and understanding one another. It emphasizes that true nobility lies in righteousness, not in superiority based on race, ethnicity, or social status.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Ma'idah (5:8), Allah commands,

O you who have believed, be persistently standing firm in justice, witnesses for Allah, even if it be against yourselves or parents and relatives. Whether one is rich or poor, Allah is more worthy of both. So follow not [personal] inclination, lest you not be just. And if you distort [your testimony] or refuse [to give it], then indeed Allah is ever, with what you do, Acquainted.

This verse emphasizes the importance of standing firm in justice, even if it goes against our personal interests or the interests of our loved ones. It reminds us that Allah's judgment is the ultimate truth, and we must not let our biases or desires cloud our sense of justice.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith serves as a powerful reminder that those who oppress and cause harm to others will not be safe from the punishment of Allah. It highlights the interconnectedness of our actions and their consequences. If we oppress and harm others, we cannot expect to be safe from the consequences of our own actions.

This Hadith also serves as a motivation for us to strive for justice and fairness in our interactions with others. It reminds us that our faith in Allah is incomplete if we do not ensure the safety and well-being of those around us. We must actively work towards creating a just society where everyone feels safe and protected from oppression.

The consequences of disregarding this Hadith are severe. If we fail to establish justice and oppress others, we risk inviting the punishment of Allah upon ourselves. This punishment may manifest in various forms, both in this world and in the Hereafter. We should reflect on the consequences of our actions and strive to rectify any injustices we may have committed.

In conclusion, Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of justice and fairness in Islam. It highlights the interconnectedness of our actions and their consequences. By treating others with kindness, fairness, and respect, we not only fulfill our duty as Muslims but also safeguard ourselves from the punishment of Allah. May we all strive to establish justice and create a society where oppression has no place.
