مَنْ حَسُنَ جَوارُهُ كَثُرَ جيرانُهُ۔
One who is neighbourly gets many neighbours.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Neighbours)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
مَنْ حَسُنَ جَوارُهُ كَثُرَ جيرانُهُ۔
This Hadith emphasizes the importance of being a good neighbor and highlights the positive consequences that come with it.
Let us delve into the meaning of the key words in this Hadith. "حَسُنَ" means goodness or excellence, "جَوارُهُ" refers to one's neighbor, and "كَثُرَ جيرانُهُ" means the increase in the number of neighbors.
To understand the significance of being a good neighbor, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. In Surah An-Nisa (4:36), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) commands the believers to
worship Allah and associate nothing with Him, and to be good to parents, relatives, orphans, the needy, the near neighbor, the neighbor farther away, the companion at your side.
This verse highlights the importance of treating neighbors with kindness and respect, regardless of their proximity.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Ma'idah (5:2), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,
And cooperate in righteousness and piety, but do not cooperate in sin and aggression.
Being a good neighbor involves cooperating in acts of righteousness and piety, such as helping one another, showing compassion, and maintaining a peaceful and harmonious environment.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith reminds us that by being a good neighbor, we not only benefit ourselves but also attract more neighbors towards us. When we display kindness, generosity, and empathy towards our neighbors, we create a positive atmosphere that encourages others to reciprocate these virtues. This leads to the expansion of our social circle and the establishment of strong bonds within our community.
Moreover, being a good neighbor has far-reaching consequences. It fosters a sense of unity and solidarity among Muslims, strengthening the fabric of society as a whole. It promotes a culture of compassion, where individuals look out for one another's well-being and support each other through difficult times. This unity is essential for the progress and prosperity of the Muslim ummah.
Reflecting on this Hadith, we can draw inspiration from the life of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ). Known for his profound knowledge and wisdom, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) exemplified the qualities of a good neighbor. He would actively engage with his neighbors, ensuring their needs were met and offering assistance whenever required. His actions were guided by the teachings of the Quran and the principles of Islam.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of being a good neighbor and highlights the positive consequences that come with it. By treating our neighbors with kindness, respect, and generosity, we not only benefit ourselves but also contribute to the unity and well-being of the Muslim community. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to be good neighbors and strengthen the bonds of brotherhood among us.
