أفْضَلُ العَقْلِ مَعْرِفَةُ الإنْسانِ نَفْسَهُ، فَمَنْ عَرَفَ نَفْسَهُ عَقَلَ، ومَنْ جَهِلَها ضَلَّ۔
The best intelligence is for a person to know his self, for the one who knows his self becomes wise and the one who fails to know it goes astray.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Intellect)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
In this profound Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), he emphasizes the importance of self-awareness and self-knowledge as the key to attaining true intelligence and wisdom. The word (intelligence) "عَقْلِ" refers to the ability to think, reason, and understand. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states that the highest form of intelligence is achieved through knowing oneself.
To understand the significance of this Hadith, let us turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly emphasizes the importance of self-reflection and self-awareness. In Surah Al-Hashr, Allah says, (Quran 59:18)
O you who have believed, fear Allah. And let every soul look to what it has put forth for tomorrow - and fear Allah. Indeed, Allah is Acquainted with what you do.
This verse highlights the need for individuals to examine their own actions, intentions, and character. By reflecting upon our own selves, we gain a deeper understanding of our strengths, weaknesses, and motivations. This self-awareness enables us to make better choices and avoid straying from the path of righteousness.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Qiyamah, Allah says, (Quran 75:3-4)
Does man think that We will not assemble his bones? Yes, We are Able to put together in perfect order the very tips of his fingers.
These verses remind us of the intricate design and composition of the human body. Allah, the Creator, has fashioned every aspect of our being with precision and purpose. By recognizing the complexity of our own existence, we are reminded of the greatness of Allah and our own insignificance in comparison. This realization humbles us and encourages us to seek knowledge and wisdom.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) further explains that those who know themselves become wise, while those who remain ignorant of their own selves go astray. This statement holds profound implications for our spiritual and intellectual growth.
When we know ourselves, we are able to recognize our flaws and work towards self-improvement. We become aware of our strengths and utilize them for the betterment of ourselves and others. This self-awareness allows us to make informed decisions, avoid harmful behaviors, and strive for excellence in all aspects of our lives.
On the other hand, those who lack self-knowledge are prone to making mistakes and falling into misguided paths. They may be easily swayed by external influences, unable to discern right from wrong. Without a deep understanding of their own selves, they are vulnerable to the pitfalls of ignorance and arrogance.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) encourages us to embark on a journey of self-discovery and self-reflection. By knowing ourselves, we gain insight into our own desires, fears, and aspirations. This knowledge enables us to align our actions with our true purpose in life and seek the pleasure of Allah.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of self-awareness and self-knowledge as the foundation of true intelligence and wisdom. By knowing ourselves, we are able to navigate through life with clarity, purpose, and righteousness. May Allah grant us the ability to truly know ourselves and attain the highest levels of intelligence and wisdom.
