Verily there are those who hold on to the remembrance of Allah and have taken it in lieu of this world and thus neither trade nor business has preoccupied them from [His] remembrance. They spend the days of their lives with it and shout it in the ears of the negligent [in order to remind them].

(Ghurar al-Hikam: Remembrance [Of Allah] And The Reminder)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure family, his noble companions, and all the righteous Muslims until the Day of Judgment.

In this profound Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), he highlights the immense value and significance of the remembrance of Allah (ذِكْرُ ٱللَّٰهِ). The Imam begins by stating that there are individuals who have truly grasped the essence of this remembrance and have chosen it over the fleeting pleasures and distractions of this world. These individuals have not allowed worldly pursuits, such as trade or business, to divert their attention away from the remembrance of Allah.

The Imam further emphasizes that these individuals dedicate their entire lives to the remembrance of Allah. They do not limit their remembrance to specific times or places, but rather, they live in a constant state of mindfulness and awareness of Allah's presence. Their hearts are filled with the remembrance of Allah, and they constantly strive to maintain a deep connection with Him.

To support the importance of remembrance, we find numerous verses in the Quran that emphasize its significance. For example, in Surah Al-Jumu'ah (62:10), Allah says,

And when the prayer is ended, then disperse in the land and seek of Allah's bounty, and remember Allah much, that you may be successful.

This verse highlights the connection between remembrance of Allah and success in this life and the hereafter. It reminds us that true success lies in constantly remembering and seeking closeness to Allah.

Another verse that emphasizes the value of remembrance is found in Surah Al-A'raf (7:205), where Allah says,

And remember your Lord within yourself in humility and in fear without being apparent in speech - in the mornings and the evenings. And do not be among the heedless.

This verse encourages us to engage in silent remembrance of Allah, even in the depths of our hearts, and to be mindful of Him at all times. It reminds us not to be among those who are negligent and heedless of Allah's remembrance.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith also highlights the role of these individuals in reminding and awakening the negligent. They shout the remembrance of Allah in the ears of those who are unaware and heedless. This serves as a wake-up call for those who have become engrossed in the distractions of this world, reminding them of their true purpose and the importance of remembering Allah.

The motivation behind the actions of these individuals is their deep understanding of the temporary nature of this world and the eternal nature of the hereafter. They recognize that the remembrance of Allah is the key to attaining true success and salvation. They are driven by their love for Allah and their desire to please Him, rather than being consumed by worldly desires and pursuits.

The consequences of embracing the remembrance of Allah and prioritizing it over worldly distractions are profound. These individuals experience a sense of tranquility, contentment, and spiritual fulfillment that cannot be attained through material possessions or worldly achievements. They are able to navigate the challenges and trials of life with patience and resilience, knowing that their ultimate goal is to please Allah and attain His pleasure.

Reflecting on this Hadith, we are reminded of the importance of incorporating the remembrance of Allah into our daily lives. We should strive to be among those who prioritize His remembrance and seek His pleasure above all else. Let us take inspiration from the example set by Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) and strive to live a life filled with the remembrance of Allah, constantly seeking His guidance, mercy, and forgiveness.

May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to hold on to His remembrance and make it a central part of our lives. May He bless us with the understanding and motivation to prioritize His remembrance over worldly distractions. And may He grant us success in this life and the hereafter.
