لاتُخِلْ نَفْسَكَ مِنْ فِكْرَة تَزيدُكَ حِكْمَةً وعِبْرَة تُفيدُكَ عِصْمَةً۔
Do not let your soul be devoid of a thought that increases your wisdom and a lesson that safeguards you [from sin].
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Soul And Holding It To Account)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of constantly seeking knowledge and wisdom. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) advises us not to neglect our intellectual growth and spiritual well-being by disregarding thoughts and reflections that can enhance our wisdom and protect us from sin.
Let us delve into the words of this Hadith to gain a deeper understanding. The word (fikrah) "فِكْرَة" refers to a thought or idea that occupies the mind. It implies engaging in deep contemplation and reflection. The transliteration of this word is "fikrah." The word (tazeedu-ka) "تَزِيدُكَ" means to increase or augment, and (hikmah) "حِكْمَةً" refers to wisdom. The transliteration of these words is "tazeedu-ka" and "hikmah" respectively.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) advises us not to let our souls be devoid of such thoughts that can increase our wisdom. This implies that we should actively seek knowledge, ponder upon it, and reflect on its deeper meanings. By doing so, we can expand our intellectual horizons and gain a deeper understanding of the world around us.
To support this exegesis, we can turn to the Quran. In Surah Al-Baqarah, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (Quran 2:30)
And [mention, O Muhammad], when your Lord said to the angels, 'Indeed, I will make upon the earth a successive authority.' They said, 'Will You place upon it one who causes corruption therein and sheds blood, while we declare Your praise and sanctify You?' Allah said, 'Indeed, I know that which you do not know.'
This verse highlights the importance of knowledge and wisdom. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) asserts His knowledge and wisdom over the angels, emphasizing that He knows what they do not. This serves as a reminder to Muslims that seeking knowledge and wisdom is a means of drawing closer to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and understanding His divine plan.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith also mentions the word (ibrah) "عِبْرَة", which means a lesson or moral insight. The transliteration of this word is "ibrah." This word signifies the practical application of knowledge and wisdom in our lives. It reminds us that acquiring knowledge is not enough; we must also implement it to safeguard ourselves from sin and wrongdoing.
The Quran provides numerous examples of the importance of drawing lessons from historical events and applying them in our lives. In Surah Yusuf, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (Quran 12:111)
There was certainly in their stories a lesson for those of understanding. Never was the Qur'an a narration invented, but a confirmation of what was before it and a detailed explanation of all things and guidance and mercy for a people who believe.
This verse emphasizes that the stories mentioned in the Quran are not mere tales but contain valuable lessons for those who possess understanding. It highlights the importance of reflecting on these stories and deriving moral insights from them. By doing so, we can gain guidance and mercy from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and strengthen our faith.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith encourages us to actively seek knowledge, reflect upon it, and apply its lessons in our lives. By doing so, we can increase our wisdom, protect ourselves from sin, and draw closer to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). It reminds us that knowledge is not stagnant but a continuous journey of growth and development.
Let us strive to follow the teachings of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) and the guidance of the Quran, seeking knowledge, reflecting upon it, and implementing its lessons in our lives. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) bless us with wisdom and understanding and protect us from the pitfalls of ignorance and sin.
