قَدْ تُعاجِلُ المَنِيَّةُ۔
Death may [at times] be hastened.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Death)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "قَدْ تُعاجِلُ المَنِيَّةُ۔" This can be translated as,
Death may [at times] be hastened.
In this beautiful Hadith, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the reality that death is not limited to a specific time or place. It can come unexpectedly and swiftly, catching us off guard.
To understand the deeper meaning of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) reminds us in Surah Al-An'am, verse 2:
It is He who created you from clay and then decreed a term [of life] for you; and a specified time is [also] with Him.
This verse emphasizes that our lives have a predetermined duration set by Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). However, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us that this predetermined time can sometimes be shortened unexpectedly.
Another verse that supports this understanding is found in Surah Al-Munafiqun, verse 11:
And if Allah should hasten for the people the evil [they invoke] as He hastens for them the good, their term would have been ended for them.
This verse highlights the concept of hastening, indicating that Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) has the power to accelerate both good and evil in our lives. Similarly, death can also be hastened by His will.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement serves as a reminder for us to be prepared for the inevitable, as we do not know when death will come knocking at our door. It urges us to reflect on the transient nature of this world and the importance of prioritizing our spiritual journey.
This Hadith also serves as a motivation for us to lead a righteous life and constantly seek forgiveness from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). We should not delay repentance and the rectification of our actions, for we do not know when our time will come. As Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Anfal, verse 24:
O you who have believed, respond to Allah and to the Messenger when he calls you to that which gives you life.
Moreover, reflecting on the hastening of death should instill a sense of urgency in our pursuit of knowledge and good deeds. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) was known for his profound knowledge and wisdom, and he encourages us to follow in his footsteps. We should not delay in seeking knowledge, understanding the Quran, and implementing its teachings in our lives.
The consequences of neglecting this reminder are grave. If we continue to procrastinate and delay our repentance, we risk being caught off guard by death. We may miss out on the opportunity to seek forgiveness and rectify our actions, leading to regret in the hereafter. As Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) warns in Surah Al-Munafiqun, verse 10:
And spend [in the way of Allah] from what We have provided you before death approaches one of you and he says, 'My Lord, if only You would delay me for a brief term so I would give charity and be among the righteous.'
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a profound reminder for all Muslims. It highlights the unpredictability of death and the need for constant preparedness. We must strive to lead a righteous life, seek knowledge, and rectify our actions without delay. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom and strength to heed this reminder and live our lives in accordance with His guidance.
