(Ghurar al-Hikam: Correctness)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

مَنْ تَوَخَّي الصَّوابَ أنْجَحَ۔

This can be translated as,

One who strives for correctness becomes successful.

Let us delve into the deeper meaning of this thought-provoking saying in light of the Quran.

The word (tawakka) "تَوَخَّي" in this Hadith means to strive or endeavor. It signifies the act of making a conscious effort to attain something. In this context, it refers to the individual's pursuit of correctness or righteousness. The word (as-sawab) "الصَّوابَ" refers to what is right, just, and in accordance with the teachings of Islam. It encompasses moral, ethical, and religious correctness.

To understand the significance of striving for correctness, we can turn to the Quran. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Asr (103:3),

Except for those who have believed and done righteous deeds and advised each other to truth and advised each other to patience.

This verse emphasizes the importance of not only believing but also acting righteously and encouraging others to do the same. It highlights the need for individuals to strive for correctness in their actions and interactions.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:148), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,

For each [religious following] is a direction toward which it faces. So race to [all that is] good. Wherever you may be, Allah will bring you forth [for judgement] all together. Indeed, Allah is over all things competent.

This verse encourages Muslims to compete in performing good deeds and striving for righteousness. It emphasizes the importance of actively pursuing what is right and just.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement highlights the significance of striving for correctness in all aspects of life. When one makes a conscious effort to align their actions with the teachings of Islam, they become successful. This success is not limited to material gains but encompasses spiritual fulfillment, peace of mind, and the pleasure of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).

By striving for correctness, individuals develop a strong moral compass and become a source of guidance and inspiration for others. Their actions become a reflection of their faith, and they become beacons of righteousness in society. The consequences of this striving for correctness are far-reaching, as it positively impacts not only the individual but also their family, community, and ultimately the entire ummah.

For example, when a Muslim strives for correctness in their business dealings, they ensure fairness, honesty, and transparency. This not only earns them success in this life but also earns the pleasure of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and the respect and trust of others. Similarly, when a Muslim strives for correctness in their relationships, they prioritize kindness, compassion, and forgiveness. This fosters harmonious and loving bonds within the family and the community.

In conclusion, Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith reminds us of the importance of striving for correctness in all aspects of our lives. By aligning our actions with the teachings of Islam and making a conscious effort to do what is right, we can attain success in this world and the hereafter. This success is not limited to material gains but encompasses spiritual fulfillment and the pleasure of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to strive for correctness and bless us with success in this life and the hereafter.
