The people may become brothers in wickedness and desert one another in religion, and [they may] love each other over falsehood and hate each other over the truth.

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

In this profound Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), he highlights the unfortunate state of affairs that can occur among people. He begins by stating that

the people may become brothers in wickedness and desert one another in religion.

This indicates that individuals may form close bonds and alliances based on their shared inclination towards evil and sinful actions. They may unite in committing acts that are contrary to the teachings of Islam, disregarding their religious obligations and responsibilities.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) then continues by saying,

and [they may] love each other over falsehood and hate each other over the truth.

This part of the Hadith highlights the sad reality that people may develop strong affection and attachment towards falsehood and deception. They may cherish relationships built on lies and deceit, while harboring animosity and disdain for those who adhere to the truth.

To understand the depth and significance of this Hadith, let us turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) warns us in Surah Al-Anfal, verse 28:

And know that your properties and your children are but a trial and that Allah has with Him a great reward.

This verse reminds us that worldly possessions and relationships can serve as tests for us. If we prioritize material gains and sinful alliances over our faith, we risk losing the true reward that lies with Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Hujurat, verse 11, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states:

O you who have believed, let not a people ridicule [another] people; perhaps they may be better than them; nor let women ridicule [other] women; perhaps they may be better than them. And do not insult one another and do not call each other by [offensive] nicknames.

This verse emphasizes the importance of unity, respect, and avoiding mockery or hatred towards one another. It reminds us that our judgments and affections should not be based on superficial factors, but rather on the righteousness and truthfulness of individuals.

Reflecting on the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) and the supporting Quranic verses, we can draw several important lessons. Firstly, it is crucial for Muslims to prioritize their faith and adhere to the teachings of Islam, even if it means standing alone or facing opposition. We should not compromise our religious values for the sake of worldly alliances or personal gains.

Secondly, this Hadith serves as a reminder to be cautious of the company we keep. We should strive to surround ourselves with individuals who uphold the truth and righteousness, rather than those who promote falsehood and wickedness. Our friendships and relationships should be based on shared values and a commitment to the principles of Islam.

Lastly, this Hadith highlights the importance of seeking knowledge and understanding the true teachings of Islam. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) was known for his immense knowledge and wisdom, and his words in this Hadith serve as a timeless reminder for Muslims to remain steadfast in the face of moral decay and societal challenges.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) sheds light on the unfortunate state of affairs where people may unite in wickedness, abandon their religious obligations, love falsehood, and hate the truth. It serves as a reminder for Muslims to prioritize their faith, choose their companions wisely, and seek knowledge to navigate the challenges of the world. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) guide us all on the straight path and protect us from falling into such detrimental behaviors.
