قَدْ تَنْقَلِبُ النُّزْهَةُ غُصَّةً۔
An outing may turn into an agony.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Outing)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
قَدْ تَنْقَلِبُ النُّزْهَةُ غُصَّةً۔
which translates to
An outing may turn into an agony.
This beautiful saying of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the unpredictable nature of life, where joyous moments can quickly transform into moments of distress and sorrow.
Let us delve deeper into the words of this Hadith and explore its meaning in light of the Quran. The word (tanqalibu) "تَنْقَلِبُ" refers to a sudden and unexpected change or transformation. It signifies the shifting of circumstances from one state to another, often without prior warning. The word (nuzhah) "النُّزْهَةُ" refers to an outing or a pleasurable experience that brings joy and happiness.
This Hadith reminds us of the transient nature of worldly pleasures and the impermanence of happiness. It serves as a reminder that life is filled with ups and downs, and we must be prepared for the unexpected turns that may come our way. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in the Quran:
(94:5)
Verily, with hardship, there is relief.
This verse reassures us that even in the midst of difficulties, there is always a glimmer of hope and relief. It teaches us to remain patient and steadfast during times of adversity, knowing that Allah's mercy and ease are near. Similarly, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us that even in moments of joy and pleasure, we should not become complacent or attached to worldly delights, as they are fleeting and can quickly turn into sources of agony.
Another verse that resonates with the message of this Hadith is:
(57:20)
Know that the life of this world is but amusement and diversion and adornment and boasting to one another and competition in increase of wealth and children - like the example of a rain whose [resulting] plant growth pleases the tillers; then it dries and you see it turned yellow; then it becomes [scattered] debris. And in the Hereafter is severe punishment and forgiveness from Allah and approval. And what is the worldly life except the enjoyment of delusion.
This verse beautifully illustrates the temporary nature of worldly pleasures and the illusion they create. It emphasizes that true fulfillment and everlasting happiness can only be found in the Hereafter. The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a reminder to Muslims that while we may experience moments of joy and pleasure in this world, we should not become attached to them, as they are transitory and can quickly transform into sources of distress.
Reflecting on this Hadith, we realize the importance of maintaining a balanced perspective in life. We should not allow ourselves to be consumed by temporary pleasures or become despondent in times of hardship. Instead, we should strive to cultivate a deep connection with Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and focus on the eternal rewards that await us in the Hereafter. By doing so, we can navigate the unpredictable nature of life with patience, resilience, and unwavering faith.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a powerful reminder for Muslims to remain steadfast in the face of life's uncertainties. It teaches us to appreciate the fleeting nature of worldly pleasures and to prioritize our spiritual growth and connection with Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom and strength to navigate the challenges of life and to seek His pleasure above all else.
