I enjoin you to be well prepared and increase your provisions for the day when you will meet with what you have sent forth and regret what you have left behind, and will be rewarded for what you had forwarded [in advance].

I enjoin you to be well prepared and increase your provisions for the day...

— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Hereafter)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his purified progeny, and his noble companions.

In this profound hadith, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) advises the Muslims to be well-prepared and to increase their provisions for the day when they will face the consequences of their actions. The Imam emphasizes the importance of foresight and planning, urging the believers to consider the consequences of their present actions in light of the future.

The word (istia'dād) "استعداد" in the hadith refers to being well-prepared or ready. It implies a state of readiness, both physically and mentally, to face any challenges or situations that may arise. This readiness includes having the necessary provisions and resources to meet the demands of the future.

The word (zād) "زاد" in the hadith refers to provisions or supplies. It signifies the material resources and provisions that one accumulates for their journey in this world and the Hereafter. These provisions can be both physical, such as food and water, as well as spiritual, such as good deeds and acts of worship.

The Imam's advice is not limited to the physical realm but extends to the spiritual and moral dimensions of life as well. It serves as a reminder to Muslims to be prepared for the consequences of their actions, both in this world and in the Hereafter. It urges them to reflect on their deeds and ensure that they are in line with the teachings of Islam.

This exhortation of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) finds resonance in the Quran, where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly emphasizes the importance of being prepared for the Day of Judgment and the consequences of our actions.

Allah says in Surah Al-Taghabun (64:9):

The Day He will assemble you for the Day of Assembly - that is the Day of Deprivation. And whoever believes in Allah and does righteousness - He will remove from him his misdeeds and admit him to gardens beneath which rivers flow, wherein they will abide forever. That is the great attainment.

This verse highlights the importance of faith and righteous deeds, which serve as provisions for the Day of Assembly. Those who believe in Allah and do good will have their sins forgiven and will be rewarded with eternal bliss in Paradise.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:197), Allah says:

And take provisions, but indeed, the best provision is Taqwa (piety). So fear Me, O you of understanding.

This verse emphasizes the significance of piety as the best provision for the believers. It is through the fear of Allah and adherence to His commands that one can truly be prepared for the challenges and trials of life.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) advice in the hadith encourages Muslims to reflect on their actions and consider the consequences they may face in the future. It serves as a reminder to be mindful of their deeds and to strive for righteousness in all aspects of life.

For example, if a person is engaged in business, they should ensure that their dealings are honest and fair, as they will be held accountable for their actions on the Day of Judgment. Similarly, if one is in a position of authority, they should govern with justice and compassion, knowing that they will be answerable for their actions in the Hereafter.

The consequences of our actions extend beyond this worldly life. The provisions we accumulate through good deeds and acts of worship will serve as a means of reward and salvation in the Hereafter. Conversely, neglecting our duties and indulging in sinful behavior will lead to regret and punishment.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) advice in this hadith serves as a powerful reminder for Muslims to be conscious of their actions and to strive for excellence in all aspects of life. It encourages them to be proactive in their pursuit of righteousness and to prepare themselves for the ultimate meeting with Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).

In conclusion, the hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of being well-prepared and increasing our provisions for the day when we will face the consequences of our actions. It urges Muslims to reflect on their deeds and ensure that they are in line with the teachings of Islam. By being mindful of our actions and striving for righteousness, we can attain success in this world and the Hereafter. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom and strength to heed this advice and prepare ourselves for the Day of Judgment.
