Tolerate that which comes your way, for indeed tolerance is a [means of] concealing faults and verily the wise one is half [the time] tolerant and half [the time] feigning negligence.

(Ghurar al-Hikam: Tolerance)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of tolerance and patience in our lives. Let us delve into the deeper meaning of this thought-provoking saying and explore its significance in the light of the Quran.

The word (ihtamil) "اِحْتَمِلْ" in the Hadith refers to the act of tolerating or enduring something that comes our way. It implies bearing hardships, difficulties, and challenges with patience and forbearance. This act of tolerance is described as a means of concealing faults or shortcomings. By tolerating the trials and tribulations that we encounter, we are able to maintain our composure and dignity, without exposing our weaknesses to others.

The Quranic teachings also emphasize the virtue of patience and tolerance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:153),

O you who have believed, seek help through patience and prayer. Indeed, Allah is with the patient.

This verse highlights the importance of patience as a means of seeking assistance from Allah during times of difficulty.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Imran (3:186), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) assures the believers,

You will surely be tested in your possessions and in yourselves. And you will surely hear from those who were given the Scripture before you and from those who associate others with Allah much abuse. But if you are patient and fear Allah - indeed, that is of the matters [worthy] of determination.

The Hadith also mentions that the wise person is half tolerant and half feigning negligence. This means that wisdom lies in striking a balance between being patient and appearing to be negligent. It does not imply that one should be negligent in fulfilling their responsibilities, but rather, it emphasizes the importance of choosing when to be patient and when to appear indifferent.

In Surah Al-Kahf (18:28), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) narrates the story of Prophet Musa (Moses) and Khidr (peace be upon them), where Khidr performs actions that may seem negligent or even harmful. However, it is later revealed that these actions were part of a greater wisdom and divine plan. This story teaches us the importance of not hastily judging situations and the need to exercise patience and trust in Allah's wisdom.

The consequences of practicing tolerance and patience are manifold. Firstly, it allows us to maintain peace within ourselves and with others. By not reacting impulsively to every situation, we can avoid unnecessary conflicts and misunderstandings. Secondly, tolerance helps us develop empathy and understanding towards others. It enables us to see beyond the surface and appreciate the complexities of human nature.

Moreover, practicing tolerance and patience also leads to personal growth and spiritual development. It strengthens our character, enhances our resilience, and deepens our trust in Allah. By enduring hardships with patience, we demonstrate our faith in Allah's wisdom and His ability to guide us through challenging times.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us of the importance of tolerance and patience in our lives. It encourages us to bear the difficulties that come our way, concealing our faults and maintaining our composure. By striking a balance between tolerance and appearing negligent, we can navigate through life's challenges with wisdom and grace. May Allah grant us the strength to practice tolerance and patience in all aspects of our lives.
