Be wary of the fool for verily, being amicable with him will bring you hardship (or exhaust you), agreeing with him will destroy you, disagreeing with him will cause you suffering and keeping his company will be [like] a curse upon you.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Fool)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. Blessings and peace be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.
The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) warns us about the dangers of associating with fools. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) advises us to be cautious and vigilant when dealing with such individuals, as their actions and behavior can have detrimental effects on our lives.
Let us delve into the key words mentioned in this Hadith to gain a deeper understanding. The word (ahmaq) "أحمق" refers to a fool or a person who lacks intelligence and wisdom. This individual is characterized by their irrationality, ignorance, and inability to make sound judgments. The word (mudaratuhu) "مداراته" means being amicable or friendly with the fool, while (muwafaqatuhu) "موافقته" refers to agreeing with the fool. On the other hand, (mukhalafatuhu) "مخالفته" signifies disagreeing with the fool, and (musahabatuhu) "مصاحبته" denotes keeping the company of the fool.
To understand the profound wisdom behind Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) advice, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) warns us about the consequences of associating with those who lack wisdom and understanding. In Surah Al-An'am, Ayah 68, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
And when you see those who engage in [offensive] discourse concerning Our verses, then turn away from them until they enter into another conversation. And if Satan should cause you to forget, then do not remain after the reminder with the wrongdoing people.
This verse emphasizes the importance of disassociating ourselves from those who engage in foolish and offensive discussions. By turning away from such individuals, we protect ourselves from being influenced by their misguided thoughts and actions.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Mumtahanah, Ayah 8, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) advises us,
Allah does not forbid you from those who do not fight you because of religion and do not expel you from your homes - from being righteous toward them and acting justly toward them. Indeed, Allah loves those who act justly.
This verse highlights the importance of maintaining justice and righteousness in our interactions with others. However, associating with fools can lead us astray from the path of justice and righteousness, as their lack of wisdom and understanding can cloud our judgment.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) warning about the consequences of agreeing with fools is supported by the Quranic teachings as well. In Surah Al-Ma'idah, Ayah 51, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) cautions us,
O you who have believed, do not take the Jews and the Christians as allies. They are [in fact] allies of one another. And whoever is an ally to them among you - then indeed, he is [one] of them. Indeed, Allah guides not the wrongdoing people.
This verse reminds us to be cautious about aligning ourselves with those who hold misguided beliefs and ideologies. Agreeing with fools can lead us to adopt their flawed perspectives, ultimately causing harm to ourselves and our faith.
Disagreeing with fools, as advised by Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), is also supported by the Quranic teachings. In Surah Al-Kahf, Ayah 54, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
And We have certainly diversified in this Qur'an for the people from every [kind of] example; but man has ever been, most of anything, [prone to] dispute.
This verse highlights the tendency of human beings to engage in disputes and arguments. Disagreeing with fools can protect us from being drawn into futile debates that waste our time and energy. It allows us to prioritize our efforts in seeking knowledge and understanding from authentic sources.
Lastly, Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) warning about the consequences of keeping the company of fools is echoed in the Quran as well. In Surah Al-Mujadila, Ayah 14, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,
Have you not considered those who make allies of a people with whom Allah has become angry? They are neither of you nor of them, and they swear to untruth while they know [they are lying].
This verse cautions us against forming alliances with those who have earned the anger of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). Keeping the company of fools can expose us to their falsehoods and deceit, leading us away from the path of righteousness.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a profound reminder for Muslims to be cautious when dealing with fools. By understanding the meanings behind the key words in this Hadith and reflecting upon the relevant Quranic verses, we can appreciate the wisdom and guidance imparted by Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ). Associating with fools can have detrimental effects on our lives, causing hardship, destruction, suffering, and even curses. Therefore, it is crucial for us to seek knowledge, wisdom, and understanding from authentic sources and to disassociate ourselves from those who lack intelligence and wisdom. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom to discern and navigate through the challenges of life, and protect us from the harmful influences of fools.
