لا تَصْحَبَنَّ مَنْ لا عَقْلَ لَهُ۔
Never associate with one who has no intelligence.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Brother, The Friend, The Associate And The Companion)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
لا تَصْحَبَنَّ مَنْ لا عَقْلَ لَهُ۔
which translates to
Never associate with one who has no intelligence.
This thought-provoking saying of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of surrounding oneself with individuals who possess intellect and wisdom.
The word (sahaba) "صحب" in this Hadith refers to companionship or association. It implies spending time with and forming relationships with others. The word (man) "من" means "one who" or "someone who." And the phrase (la 'aql lahu) "لا عقل له" means "has no intelligence."
In the Quran, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly emphasizes the significance of seeking knowledge, wisdom, and understanding. In Surah Al-Zumar, verse 9, Allah says,
Are those who know equal to those who do not know?
This verse highlights the distinction between those who possess knowledge and those who lack it. It implies that associating with individuals who lack intelligence can hinder one's own growth and development.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Hujurat, verse 6, Allah advises the believers,
O you who have believed, if there comes to you a disobedient one with information, investigate, lest you harm a people out of ignorance and become, over what you have done, regretful.
This verse encourages Muslims to critically evaluate the information and knowledge presented to them. It emphasizes the importance of associating with individuals who possess intelligence and discernment, as they are more likely to provide accurate and beneficial guidance.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement serves as a reminder for Muslims to be mindful of the company they keep. Associating with individuals who lack intelligence can have detrimental effects on one's own intellect, character, and decision-making abilities. Such individuals may not possess the wisdom and understanding necessary to provide sound advice or guidance.
When we surround ourselves with intelligent and knowledgeable individuals, we are more likely to benefit from their insights, perspectives, and experiences. Their wisdom can help us make informed decisions, navigate challenges, and grow spiritually. Conversely, associating with those who lack intelligence can lead to misunderstandings, misguidance, and negative influences.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) was known for his exceptional knowledge and wisdom. His words carry great weight and should be heeded by all Muslims. By seeking companionship with individuals who possess intelligence, we can enhance our own intellect, deepen our understanding of Islam, and strive towards personal and spiritual growth.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a reminder for Muslims to be cautious in choosing their companions. Surrounding ourselves with individuals who possess intelligence and wisdom is essential for our personal and spiritual development. By doing so, we can benefit from their knowledge, insights, and guidance, and avoid the negative consequences of associating with those who lack intelligence. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom to choose our companions wisely and bless us with the ability to seek knowledge and understanding.
