Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

In this profound Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), he highlights the importance of asking and the value it holds in comparison to what is given. The Imam (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

Verily the value of asking is greater than the worth of what is given, so do not regard that which you give as much, for it will never be equal to the humiliation of asking.

Let us delve deeper into the words used in this Hadith to gain a better understanding. The word (su'al) "سؤال" refers to asking or requesting something from someone. It encompasses seeking help, guidance, or any form of assistance. The word (nawal) "نوال" refers to what is given or bestowed upon someone in response to their request. It represents the act of giving or granting.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes that the value of asking is greater than what is given. This highlights the significance of seeking knowledge, guidance, and support from others. It is through asking that we expand our understanding, gain insights, and develop ourselves. The act of asking reflects humility, acknowledging our limitations, and recognizing the wisdom and knowledge possessed by others.

To further comprehend the wisdom behind this Hadith, let us turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) encourages us to seek knowledge and guidance in numerous verses. In Surah Al-Baqarah, Allah says, (2:186)

And when My servants ask you concerning Me, indeed I am near. I respond to the invocation of the supplicant when he calls upon Me

This verse emphasizes the importance of asking Allah for guidance, as He is always ready to respond to our supplications.

Additionally, in Surah Al-Furqan, Allah describes the qualities of the true servants of the Most Merciful, stating, (25:73)

And those who, when they are reminded of the verses of their Lord, do not fall upon them deaf and blind

This verse highlights the importance of seeking knowledge and guidance from the verses of the Quran, not turning a blind eye or a deaf ear to them.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us not to regard what we give as significant in comparison to the act of asking. This serves as a reminder to remain humble and not let our ego overshadow the value of seeking help or guidance. The Imam (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes that the humiliation of asking is far greater than any material possession we may give.

To illustrate this point, let us reflect on the story of Prophet Musa (Moses) and Khidr in Surah Al-Kahf. When Musa accompanied Khidr on a journey to seek knowledge, he was instructed not to question the actions of Khidr. However, Musa's curiosity got the better of him, and he asked Khidr about his actions. This incident highlights the importance of seeking knowledge, even if it means humbling ourselves and asking questions.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the value of asking and seeking knowledge. It reminds us to remain humble and not underestimate the significance of seeking guidance from others. The act of asking reflects our willingness to learn, grow, and expand our understanding. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom to seek knowledge and guidance, and may we always approach others with humility and respect.
