جِماعُ المُرُوءَةِ أنْ لاتَعْمَلَ فِي السِّرِّ ما تَسْتَحْيي مِنْهُ فِي العَلانِيَةِ۔
The completeness of magnanimity is for you not to do in private what you would feel ashamed of doing in front of others.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Magnanimity)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of maintaining integrity and moral conduct in both public and private spheres. The key word in this Hadith is (muruwwah) "مُرُوءَةِ", which can be translated as "magnanimity" or "nobility of character." It refers to the quality of being honorable, virtuous, and upright in one's actions and behavior.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) advises Muslims to refrain from engaging in any actions or behaviors in private that they would feel ashamed of if done openly. This highlights the significance of consistency in one's conduct and the need to align one's private actions with their public persona. It encourages individuals to uphold their values and principles regardless of the presence or absence of others.
This teaching of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) finds support in the Quran as well. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-A'raf (7:33),
Say, 'My Lord has only forbidden immoralities - what is apparent of them and what is concealed...
This verse emphasizes the prohibition of immoral actions, whether they are done openly or in secret. It highlights the importance of maintaining moral integrity in all aspects of life, including private matters.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:12), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,
O you who have believed, avoid much [negative] assumption. Indeed, some assumption is sin. And do not spy or backbite each other. Would one of you like to eat the flesh of his brother when dead? You would detest it. And fear Allah; indeed, Allah is Accepting of repentance and Merciful.
This verse emphasizes the importance of avoiding negative assumptions, spying, and backbiting. It highlights the need to respect the privacy and dignity of others, and to refrain from engaging in actions that would harm or degrade them.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a reminder for Muslims to be consistent in their behavior and to uphold their values and principles at all times. It encourages individuals to reflect upon their actions and to consider the consequences of their choices. By adhering to this teaching, Muslims can cultivate a sense of self-accountability and strive towards moral excellence.
For example, if a person refrains from engaging in dishonest practices in public but indulges in such behavior in private, they are compromising their integrity and betraying their own values. This inconsistency can lead to a loss of self-respect and a deterioration of character. On the other hand, if a person maintains their honesty and integrity in both public and private spheres, they will earn the respect and trust of others, and their character will flourish.
Moreover, the Hadith encourages Muslims to develop a sense of self-awareness and self-discipline. It urges individuals to reflect upon their intentions and motivations behind their actions. By doing so, Muslims can align their actions with their values and ensure that they are acting with sincerity and righteousness.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of maintaining integrity and moral conduct in both public and private spheres. It reminds Muslims to be consistent in their behavior and to align their actions with their values and principles. By adhering to this teaching, Muslims can cultivate a sense of self-accountability and strive towards moral excellence. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) guide us all to follow the teachings of the Ahl al-Bayt and grant us the strength to uphold our values in all aspects of life.
