Hadith #10359

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

إيّاكَ أنْ تَرْضى عَنْ نَفْسِكَ فَيَكْثُرَ السّاخِطُ عَلَيْكَ۔

This Hadith serves as a profound reminder for Muslims to be cautious of becoming complacent with oneself, as it can lead to an increase in the number of people who are displeased with them.

Let us delve into the words of this Hadith to gain a deeper understanding. The word (iyyaka) "إيّاكَ" is a form of the Arabic pronoun "you" used to emphasize a warning or advice. It signifies the importance of paying attention and taking heed. (an tarda) "أنْ تَرْضى" means "to be pleased" or "to be satisfied." (an nafsika) "عَنْ نَفْسِكَ" refers to oneself, highlighting the need to be cautious of self-satisfaction. Finally, (fayakthur as-sakhitu 'alayka) "فَيَكْثُرَ السّاخِطُ عَلَيْكَ" means

thereby increasing the number of those who are displeased with you.

To further understand the significance of this Hadith, let us turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) reminds us in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:13),

O mankind, indeed We have created you from male and female and made you peoples and tribes that you may know one another. Indeed, the most noble of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous of you. Indeed, Allah is Knowing and Acquainted.

This verse emphasizes the importance of humility and recognizing the equality of all individuals in the sight of Allah.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Qasas (28:76), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,

Indeed, Qarun was from the people of Moses, but he tyrannized them. And We gave him of treasures whose keys would burden a band of strong men; thereupon his people said to him, 'Do not exult. Indeed, Allah does not like the exultant.'

This verse serves as a cautionary tale, reminding us of the consequences of arrogance and self-satisfaction. Qarun's wealth and power led him to oppress others, ultimately resulting in his downfall.

Reflecting on the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) in light of these Quranic verses, we understand that being pleased with oneself can lead to a sense of superiority and arrogance. This attitude can alienate others and create a divide between individuals. When we become complacent with our own actions and disregard the feelings and opinions of others, we risk losing their respect and goodwill.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) possessed immense knowledge and wisdom, and he emphasized the importance of self-reflection and humility. He understood that true success lies in recognizing our own flaws and continuously striving for self-improvement. By being mindful of our actions and considering the perspectives of others, we can foster harmonious relationships and create a sense of unity within the Muslim community.
