كَما تَدينُ تُدانُ۔
As you deal with others, so too will you be dealt with.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Actions And Deeds)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his purified progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "كَمَا تَدِينُ تُدَانُ۔" This can be translated as,
As you deal with others, so too will you be dealt with.
This impactful Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the principle of reciprocity in our interactions with others.
To understand the deeper meaning of this Hadith, let us analyze the key words. The word (tadeen) "تَدِينُ" is derived from the root word (deen) "دين", which has multiple meanings in the Arabic language. One of its meanings is "religion" or "faith," but in this context, it refers to one's dealings, actions, and behavior towards others. The word (tudan) "تُدَانُ" is derived from the root word (dan) "دان", which means to be dealt with or recompensed accordingly.
This Hadith emphasizes the concept of reciprocity in our interactions with others. It reminds us that the way we treat others will ultimately determine how we are treated in return. This principle is not only applicable in our social interactions but also extends to our spiritual and moral conduct.
The Quran provides numerous verses that support the message of this Hadith. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Isra (17:80),
And say: My Lord! Cause me to come in with a firm incoming and to go out with a firm outgoing. And give me from Thy presence a sustaining Power.
This verse highlights the importance of maintaining integrity and righteousness in our actions, as it will determine our ultimate outcome.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Qasas (28:77), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
But seek, with the (wealth) which Allah has bestowed on thee, the Home of the Hereafter, nor forget thy portion in this world: but do thou good, as Allah has been good to thee, and seek not (occasions for) mischief in the land: for Allah loves not those who do mischief.
This verse emphasizes the principle of reciprocating goodness and avoiding harm, both in this world and the Hereafter.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) beautiful saying serves as a reminder for Muslims to be mindful of their actions and interactions with others. It encourages us to treat others with kindness, respect, and fairness, knowing that our own treatment will be a reflection of our deeds.
When we embody the teachings of Islam and follow the example of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) and his Ahl al-Bayt, we create a positive and harmonious environment. Our actions have the power to inspire others and foster a sense of unity and compassion within the Muslim community.
Conversely, if we engage in dishonesty, injustice, or harm towards others, we should not be surprised if we are met with similar treatment. Our actions have consequences, and Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) is just in His recompense.
Reflecting on this Hadith, we should strive to be mindful of our behavior and interactions with others. Let us remember that our treatment of others is a reflection of our own character and faith. By embodying the principles of justice, kindness, and compassion, we can create a society that is rooted in the teachings of Islam and fosters unity and harmony among Muslims.
May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) guide us to follow the path of righteousness and grant us the ability to treat others with kindness and justice. May He forgive our shortcomings and bless us with His mercy and forgiveness. And may peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his purified progeny, and his noble companions.
