Hadith #9343

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

اللُّؤْمُ قَبيحٌ فَلا تَجْعَلْهُ لُبْسَكَ۔

This can be translated as,

Vileness is ugly so do not make it your attire.

This enlightening saying of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the importance of avoiding immoral behavior and adopting virtuous qualities.

Let us delve deeper into the words used in this Hadith. The word (al-lu'm) "اللُّؤْمُ" refers to vileness, wickedness, or immorality. It encompasses all forms of evil deeds, whether they are in words, actions, or intentions. It is a quality that is detested by Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and is contrary to the teachings of Islam.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes that vileness is not only morally wrong but also aesthetically displeasing. It is described as (qabih) "قَبيحٌ", meaning ugly or repulsive. This metaphorical language highlights the repugnance of vileness and its negative impact on an individual's character and appearance.

To further understand the significance of this Hadith, let us turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-A'raf (7:33),

Say, 'My Lord has only forbidden immoralities - what is apparent of them and what is concealed - and sin, and oppression without right, and that you associate with Allah that for which He has not sent down authority, and that you say about Allah that which you do not know.'

This verse emphasizes the prohibition of immoralities, including vileness, by Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). It highlights the importance of avoiding sinful behavior and adhering to the teachings of Islam. By refraining from vileness, we uphold the principles of righteousness and protect ourselves from the consequences of immoral actions.

Another verse that supports the message of this Hadith is found in Surah Al-Qasas (28:55), where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,

And when they hear ill speech, they turn away from it and say, 'For us are our deeds, and for you are your deeds. Peace will be upon you; we seek not the ignorant.'

This verse encourages Muslims to distance themselves from ill speech and vileness. It teaches us to respond to negativity with patience and wisdom, focusing on our own actions rather than engaging in immoral behavior. By doing so, we maintain our integrity and strive for peace and harmony in our interactions with others.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement serves as a reminder for Muslims to avoid vileness in all aspects of life. It urges us to cultivate virtuous qualities and to refrain from engaging in immoral behavior. By embodying righteousness and avoiding vileness, we not only please Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) but also present ourselves as ambassadors of Islam to the world.

Let us reflect on the profound wisdom of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) and strive to make righteousness our attire, adorning ourselves with virtuous qualities and distancing ourselves from vileness. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) guide us on the path of righteousness and grant us the strength to resist the temptations of immorality.
