Do not regard an expression uttered by any person as evil if you can find it capable of bearing some good.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Nahj al-Balagha — Peak of Eloquence: Hadith #360)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
Do not regard an expression uttered by any person as evil if you can find it capable of bearing some good.
This impactful Hadith emphasizes the importance of not hastily judging the words of others, but rather seeking the potential good within them.
Let us delve into the key words of this Hadith to gain a deeper understanding. The word (thunnanna) "ظُنَّنَّ" means to assume or think. It implies that we should not hastily assume that every word spoken by someone is inherently evil. (kalimatin) "كَلِمَةٍ" refers to an expression or a word, highlighting the significance of individual statements. (kharajat) "خَرَجَتْ" means to come out or be uttered, indicating that the words have been spoken by someone. (saw'an) "سَوْءًا" translates to evil or bad, representing the negative connotation that we should not immediately associate with every word. Finally, (khayr) "خَيْرِ" means good, and (muhtamalan) "مُحْتَمَلاً" signifies the potential or capability of bearing good.
To further comprehend the wisdom behind this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:6),
O you who have believed, if there comes to you a disobedient one with information, investigate, lest you harm a people out of ignorance and become, over what you have done, regretful.
This verse emphasizes the importance of verifying information before passing judgment, highlighting the need for careful consideration and investigation.
Additionally, in Surah Al-Isra (17:36), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,
And do not pursue that of which you have no knowledge. Indeed, the hearing, the sight, and the heart - about all those [one] will be questioned.
This verse reminds us not to pursue or act upon something without proper knowledge, highlighting the significance of seeking understanding and avoiding hasty judgments.
In light of these Quranic verses, we can understand that Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith encourages us to adopt a balanced and fair approach when interpreting the words of others. It urges us to refrain from immediately assuming the worst about someone's intentions or character based solely on their expressions. Instead, we should strive to find the potential good within their words, seeking understanding and avoiding hasty judgments.
This Hadith teaches us the importance of open-mindedness, empathy, and the ability to see beyond the surface level. It reminds us that individuals may express themselves in different ways, and it is our responsibility to look for the underlying good intentions or wisdom within their words. By doing so, we can foster better communication, build stronger relationships, and promote harmony within our communities.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) was renowned for his profound knowledge and wisdom. His ability to discern the deeper meanings behind words and actions allowed him to navigate complex situations with wisdom and fairness. As Muslims, we should strive to emulate his example by approaching the words of others with an open heart and a willingness to seek the potential good within them.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us to refrain from hastily judging the words of others and to seek the potential good within them. It encourages us to adopt a balanced and fair approach, in line with the teachings of the Quran. By doing so, we can foster understanding, promote harmony, and embody the qualities of empathy and open-mindedness.
