تَجَنَّبْ مِن كُلِّ خُلْق أسْوَأَهُ، وجاهِدْ نَفْسَكَ على تَجَنُّبِهِ فَإنَّ الشَّرَّ لَجاجَةٌ۔

Keep away from the worst of every character trait and struggle with...

— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Good Character)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) urges us to avoid the worst of every character trait and to strive in our efforts to distance ourselves from it. The word (tajannab) "تَجَنَّبْ" means to abstain or keep away from, while (khulq) "خُلْق" refers to character traits or qualities. The word (aswah) "أسْوَأَهُ" means the worst or most evil. Therefore, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) advises us to stay away from the most negative and harmful qualities that can exist within a person.

This guidance from Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) aligns with the teachings of the Quran, which repeatedly emphasizes the importance of cultivating good character and avoiding negative traits. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Qasas, verse 83:

And [recall] the Day We will resurrect from every nation a witness. Then it will not be permitted to the disbelievers [to apologize or make excuses], nor will they be asked to appease [Allah].

This verse highlights the importance of being mindful of our actions and character traits, as we will be held accountable for them on the Day of Resurrection. It serves as a reminder that we should strive to avoid negative qualities and instead focus on developing positive ones.

Another verse that supports the exegesis of this Hadith is found in Surah Al-Ma'idah, verse 2:

And cooperate in righteousness and piety, but do not cooperate in sin and aggression. And fear Allah; indeed, Allah is severe in penalty.

This verse emphasizes the importance of striving for righteousness and piety, while avoiding sin and aggression. It encourages Muslims to work together in promoting goodness and avoiding evil. By following this guidance, we can contribute to a harmonious society and protect ourselves from the harmful consequences of negative character traits.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) advice to struggle with ourselves in keeping away from the worst character traits is a call to self-reflection and self-improvement. It reminds us that we have the power to change and overcome our negative inclinations. By actively working on ourselves, we can purify our hearts and strive towards becoming better individuals.

The consequences of not heeding this advice are evident in society. When individuals fail to distance themselves from negative character traits, such as arrogance, greed, or dishonesty, it can lead to harm and discord. These traits can damage relationships, create conflicts, and hinder personal growth. Therefore, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) warns us about the obstinacy of evil, indicating that it can persist and cause significant harm if not actively resisted.

Reflecting on this Hadith, we are reminded of the importance of self-awareness and self-discipline. It is incumbent upon us as Muslims to constantly evaluate our character and strive to embody the noble qualities taught by Islam. By doing so, we can contribute positively to our communities and strive towards spiritual growth and closeness to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).

May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the strength and guidance to avoid the worst of character traits and to continuously strive for self-improvement. May He purify our hearts and grant us success in this world and the Hereafter.
