(Ghurar al-Hikam: Good Character)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

Two attributes never come together in the heart of a believer: bad character and miserliness.

This amazing Hadith highlights the importance of cultivating good character and generosity in the hearts of believers.

Let us first examine the key words in this Hadith. The word (khillatan) "خَلَّتانِ" refers to two attributes or qualities. The word (tajtami'an) "تَجتَمِعانِ" means to come together or coexist. (qalb) "قَلبِ" translates to heart, which symbolizes the innermost core of a person's being. (mu'min) "مُؤمِن" refers to a believer, someone who has faith in Allah and follows His guidance. (su'u al-khulq) "سُوءُ الخُلقِ" means bad character or manners, while (al-bukhl) "البُخْلُ" refers to miserliness or stinginess.

To understand the significance of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) emphasizes the importance of good character in several verses. In Surah Al-Qalam (68:4), Allah says,

And indeed, you are of a great moral character.

This verse highlights the exemplary character of the Prophet Muhammad (), who serves as a role model for all Muslims. Similarly, in Surah Al-Qasas (28:56), Allah states,

Indeed, you guide to a straight path.

This verse highlights the Prophet's () role in guiding people towards righteousness and good character.

Furthermore, the Quran also emphasizes the importance of generosity and spending in the way of Allah. In Surah Al-Baqarah (2:261), Allah says,

The example of those who spend their wealth in the way of Allah is like a seed [of grain] which grows seven spikes; in each spike is a hundred grains. And Allah multiplies [His reward] for whom He wills. And Allah is all-Encompassing and Knowing.

This verse illustrates the immense reward and blessings that come with being generous and giving for the sake of Allah.

Now, let us delve deeper into the meaning and implications of this Hadith. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights that bad character and miserliness cannot coexist in the heart of a believer. This means that a true believer, someone who has faith in Allah and follows His guidance, should strive to possess good character and be generous in their actions.

Good character encompasses qualities such as honesty, kindness, patience, humility, and forgiveness. These qualities are not only praised in Islam but are also universally valued. A person with good character is respected and admired by others, and their actions reflect the teachings of Islam. On the other hand, bad character, which includes traits like arrogance, dishonesty, anger, and backbiting, is not befitting of a believer. It tarnishes one's reputation and distances them from the teachings of Islam.

Miserliness, or stinginess, is the opposite of generosity. It is the reluctance to spend wealth or resources for the benefit of others. Islam encourages believers to be generous and to give in charity. The act of giving not only benefits those in need but also purifies the heart of the giver. It fosters a sense of empathy, compassion, and gratitude towards Allah's blessings. Miserliness, on the other hand, stems from a lack of trust in Allah's provision and a selfish attachment to worldly possessions.

The consequences of possessing bad character and miserliness are detrimental to both the individual and society. Bad character leads to strained relationships, conflicts, and a negative impact on one's spiritual well-being. It hinders personal growth and prevents the individual from attaining true success and happiness. Miserliness, on the other hand, creates a sense of greed and selfishness, which can lead to a lack of empathy and disregard for the needs of others. This can result in social inequality, poverty, and a breakdown of communal harmony.

Reflecting on this Hadith, Muslims are reminded of the importance of self-reflection and self-improvement. We should strive to cultivate good character traits and be generous in our actions. By doing so, we align ourselves with the teachings of Islam and contribute positively to our communities. Let us remember that the heart of a true believer should be filled with compassion, kindness, and generosity, as these are the qualities that bring us closer to Allah and earn His pleasure.

May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) guide us all to embody good character and generosity in our lives. May He purify our hearts from bad traits and bless us with the ability to be generous and selfless. Ameen.
