مَنْ عَرَفَ خِداعَ الدُّنيا لَمْ يَغْتَرَّ مِنْها بِمُحالاتِ الأحْلامِ۔
One who recognizes the deceptions of this world will not be deceived by its impossible dreams.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: This World)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
One who recognizes the deceptions of this world will not be deceived by its impossible dreams.
This beautiful saying of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the importance of understanding the true nature of this worldly life and the dangers of being deluded by its illusions.
Let us delve into the important words of this Hadith to gain a deeper understanding. The word (khida'a) "خِداعَ" refers to the deceptions, tricks, and illusions that the world presents to us. It encompasses the allurements, temptations, and false promises that can lead one astray from the path of righteousness. The word (dunya) "دُّنيا" refers to the temporal and material aspects of this worldly life, which often distract us from our ultimate purpose and the pursuit of eternal happiness.
To further comprehend the wisdom behind this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) warns us in Surah Al-Imran, verse 185:
Every soul will taste death, and you will only be given your [full] compensation on the Day of Resurrection. So he who is drawn away from the Fire and admitted to Paradise has attained [his desire]. And what is the life of this world except the enjoyment of delusion.
This verse reminds us that the true reward and compensation for our actions will be granted in the Hereafter. The worldly life, in comparison, is merely a fleeting illusion that can distract us from our ultimate goal of attaining Paradise. It is crucial to recognize the transitory nature of this world and not be deceived by its temporary pleasures and desires.
Additionally, in Surah Al-Hadid, verse 20, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states:
Know that the life of this world is but amusement and diversion and adornment and boasting to one another and competition in increase of wealth and children - like the example of a rain whose [resulting] plant growth pleases the tillers; then it dries and you see it turned yellow; then it becomes [scattered] debris. And in the Hereafter is severe punishment and forgiveness from Allah and approval. And what is the worldly life except the enjoyment of delusion.
This verse emphasizes that the worldly life is filled with distractions and temporary pleasures that can lead us astray. It compares the allurements of this world to the transient growth of plants after rain, which eventually wither away. The true purpose of life lies in seeking forgiveness from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and striving for His approval, rather than being consumed by the delusions of worldly pursuits.
Now, let us reflect on the impactful message conveyed by Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) in this Hadith. By recognizing the deceptions of this world, one becomes aware of the fleeting nature of its promises and desires. This awareness acts as a shield against being deceived by the impossible dreams and unrealistic expectations that the world presents to us.
When we understand that the true purpose of life is to seek the pleasure of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and strive for the eternal rewards of the Hereafter, we are less likely to be swayed by the temporary attractions of this world. We become more focused on fulfilling our duties as Muslims, seeking knowledge, performing good deeds, and developing a strong connection with our Creator.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) profound statement serves as a reminder for us to constantly evaluate our priorities and not be deceived by the illusions of this world. It encourages us to seek knowledge and understanding, so that we may navigate through the challenges and temptations of life with wisdom and discernment.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us the importance of recognizing the deceptions of this world and not being deceived by its impossible dreams. By understanding the transient nature of worldly pursuits and focusing on our ultimate purpose, we can safeguard ourselves from being led astray. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom to navigate through the trials of this world and guide us towards the path of righteousness.
